One of our favorite American rock bands, and one of the hardest working I might add are back, and it begs the question, did they ever leave? These United States have been a band that has been on our radar for a couple years now, and are getting ready to release their third full length album this fall.

The new record is titled Everything Touches Everything and Jesse Elliott and the boys kick things off with one of the poppiest tunes to date with the lead single “I Want You To Keep Everything.” Not only is this a sugary sweet hit, but I got a chance to hear it live a few months back and it sounds brilliant in person. You will get an opportunity to see the boys live again too, as their upcoming never-ending tour hits Cincinnati on August 13th at the Southgate House.

So listen to the new song below, get excited for the new album (Sept 1), and check out when they are coming to a town near you after the jump.

Sadly, I was unable to attend the Jason Lytle show at the Southgate House this week. Ace photog Keith Klenowski was in attendance however, and provides this great photoset for us.

Cincinnati’s Slow Claw Prepare Debut Album

It’s the dog day of summer here in Cincinnati, we have officially jumped into the 80’s and 90’s on a semi-regular basis. Another thing that continues to heat up is the amount of great bands the area continues to churn out. The latest to hit my radar is Slow Claw.

Slow Claw is a band that rises from the ashes of another tri-state area group you might know called Junior Revolution. And while some of the same steady instrumentation that I know I enjoyed from Junior Revolution is present, Slow Claw is certainly a trip down another path.

The trio recorded the album in Charleston, South Carolina, and the sound is certainly a bit more organic and a bit less “big” sounding than some of the Junior Revolution stuff. But that being said, their debut album Grandfather Clocks is not easy to pinhole into one genre, and I think that speaks to the strengths and to the confidence of these musicians. While this is a debut, it does not sound like one.

Grandfather Clocks will be released August 18th officially, and the band are playing a bunch of dates this summer leading up the release, including a gig downtown here in Cincinnati on Fountain Square for Indie Rock Summer along with Margot & The Nuclear So & So’s. (all dates after the jump)

In addition, the guys are keeping up a pretty fun blog that you should really check out as well.

If you are like me, and were a big fan of all things Grandaddy for years, tonight at the Southgate House you are in for a real treat. Jason Lytle, former Grandaddy frontman, is in town and has a show tonight in Newport. Since the demise of Grandaddy in 2006, Lytle has moved from California to Montana, continued to skateboard and also write and record music and finally released his debut solo record earlier this year on the Anti label.

The album is called Yours Truly, The Commuter and if you have not heard it yet, it could easily double for a Grandaddy album. So be sure to get out and about this evening and hit the Southgate House in Newport for what promises to be a really fun show.

Enjoy this new video of Jason for his song “It’s The Weekend”, where he washes his car.

The Lions Rampant – It’s Fun To Do Bad Things

The Lions Rampant
When it comes to loud rock n’ roll and you wanna raise your can of PBR to, there are not many better options that Cincinnati’s own The Lions Rampant. The Cincy trio have been burning up midwest highways in the past couple years converting all those who will listen to the church of “Blue Infused, Garage Brewed, Rock N’ Roll.”

The boys have also been busy behind the scenes, recording their debut full length album, which is aptly titled, It’s Fun To Do Bad Things. The album was recorded here in town at Candyland studios with the help of sometimes Lion and former half of The Sheds Cameron Cochran. It’s not without its fair share of two minute, punch in the gut, beer soaked rockers, which is probably what you would expect from the guys. But what might surprise you is the layers of sound that you will find yourself wading through as well.

The record has sounds of psychedelic rock to go along with the bar anthems, and mixes in a tip of the cap to the early garage rock pioneers throughout as well. Taking it “old school”, if you will. The step forward to make this album for the Lions was one of self exploration, maturation, and of course plenty of drinking.

The record has no release date yet, but you can expect it soon, and also on vinyl at some point. I can share with you today though, some of these new songs because the Lions made a recent trip into the WOXY.com lounge and played 6 of em! Click through for the full session right here, and download a couple of my favorites below.

So I have been trying out the Soundcloud dropbox on the right hand side of our site here lately, and have been receiving some really interesting tunes as a result. I have received alot of submissions, and honestly have not listened to them all yet, but of the ones I have I thought I would highlight here.

Autumn Sky is a female singer from Northern California I was really pleased to be introduced to via Sound Cloud, you can listen to and download her song Rockets below. This might be my favorite submission so far.

Autumn Sky – Rockets!

Next up is a tune from a band called The Sleep. This group is prepping to release their debut album Never In A Million Years and actually is from right here in Cincinnati! This song has a dark electronic feel to it, akin to 90’s trip hop. I’m really digging it!

The Sleep – Take Me

And finally, one of our first submissions is also one of the best. It comes from a duo called Apple Juice Orchestra out of North Carolina and has the soothing sounds of indie electronica mixed with some underlying elements of jazz. At least to my ears. Enjoy this song, “Abacus” and be sure to check them out more on their Myspace page.

Wilco released Wilco The Album today, and it is as much a reason to celebrate as you might have a on Tuesday. My vinyl copy arrived yesterday, and I snapped the above photo of the inside album art. I also realized this is the first Wilco LP that is not a double LP since Summerteeth. Wilco really know how to do vinyl too, so I suggest you make that your preferred format. After all, it comes with a CD.

I have the album stuck on repeat right now, so you will have to excuse me, gotta get back to listening. :)

Saturday June 27th there are two events to benefit a Skateboard Park in Newport, KY. Even if you yourself do not skate, just stopping by for a few minutes would help the city of Newport know that people in the Tri-state area support skateboarding.

From 12:00pm-6:00pm there will be an open skate on Riverboat Row in Newport, KY. There will be street obstacles and a mini ramp for anyone to skate and enjoy.

At 8:00pm in The Southgate House Ballroom there will be a benefit concert featuring The Lions Rampant, The Read, The Highlight Reel, Los Heavies and DJ Chinn. The show is $5 for 21 and up and $8 20 and under. The rock will be preceded by DJ Chinn hosting a dance party. All of the money raised at the event will go to the Newport Skate Park.

This blog is not about top 40 pop music. You don’t come here to find out what is burning up the Billboard charts. But like so many of you, I grew up on pop music, and the biggest and most important pop musicians of our time, and maybe ever was Michael Jackson. He died after a cardiac arrest today at the young age of 50.

It’s a sad sad day in the music industry.

Wilco Performs You Never Know On The Tonight Show

I’ve been making a habit of watching the Tonight Show this summer ever since Conan O’Brien took the reigns, something about his self-depracating style of humor cracks me up. And of course you know I make a habit of taking in all things Wilco.

The new album is due out next week, and to tide us over, the boys made a trip to the Tonight Show last night, wearing the Nudie suits, with Nels plucking on the double-neck guitar I mentioned and even filling out the stage with a couple musicians I was unfamiliar with. Enjoy the video below, and if you have not already done so, pre-order the new record here.
