Apostle of Hustle - National Anthem of Nowhere

When it comes to spin-off bands, Broken Social Scene have more of them than All In The Family had spin-off TVaoh.jpg shows (we count 9 here). But, in the grand scheme of things, Apostle of Hustle is probably one of the first in a long line. Originally formed back in 2001 when, after recording the first BSS album, Andrew Whiteman spent two-months with his godmother’s family in Cuba. When he returned, he had learned to play the tres, a Cuban guitar and corralled BSS bandmates , Julian Brown and Dean Stone to record the first Apostle of Hustle album with him, the Cuban influenced, Folkloric Feel.

Fast forward to current day, as Apostle’s new album, “National Anthem of Nowhere” is being prepped. The new disc is not much like the debut however, and gives off way more of a BSS feel than anything Latin (spare the Federico Garcia Lorca) poem “¡Rafaga!”). The album instead leans into 90s experimental rock and some of the same sounds that made Broken Social Scenes debut album, You Forgot It in People such a success.

The title track could stand alongside any BSS tune and it’s a shame more of the album doesn’t take a similar tone, though “My Swords Hands Anger” and “Chances Are” are keepers as well. Have a listen to two tracks from the new record, which hit stores this week via Arts and Crafts.

This album is shaping up to be one of my favorites of the year. For me it beats a lot of the BSS stuff.
