You may or may not remember, but some time ago, one of the first proper interviews ENS did with a real live in person artist was with Matt Hales, aka Aqualung. You can still view the interview and some great photos here. Because of how kind Matt was and also because we love his music so much, makes us big fans of him and his work.
So, naturally, when the new album came out last week I went out and picked up a copy. The first single from the album, Pressure
Suit, is an incredible starting point for this album, his second full length to hit the US. It shines very bright and you can tell from the sharp production that Matt’s team has brought their collective “A Game” to achieve it. The album outside of Pressure Suit is what many fans of Aqualung are hoping for, his signature keys and heartfelt penned songs. I feel constantly drawn into the softer moments of the album only to be jarred awake with a strong chorus or triumphant instrumentation. This combination of soft and sharp gives “Memory Man” at least as much staying power as “Strange And Beautiful” had, which is an easy listen for me to this day.
And I think that may be the strong suit of Hales, the ability to write and record music that is versatile enough to be an acceptable fit for many times and moments of a listeners experience. It’s not simply something I pull out to relax, although that certainly happens. In summary, Hales has another notch on his belt with Memory Man, and the Chris Martin’s and Snow Patrol’s of the world should be taking notes.
