There are plenty of albums that hit my inbox or mailbox that I need to spend time with, get to know and then finally get my thoughts together to write about. This is not one of those. This is an album that has an immediate fun and danceable vibe to. 23 year old Calvin Harris has created what is essentially an album that not only goes on about the 1980s, but also sounds like it could have been released then, and he means it to be that way of course.
And since Calvin is only 23, do not mistake him for someone pining to return to the infamous decade, but rather someone with a thick appreciation for and sarcastic wit about the 80s. The album is really one large dance party, with bouncy synths and lines that get stuck right into your subconscious. Lyrically it is very thin, but that is kinda the point, as Harris points out…
“My tunes aren’t supposed to invoke deep thought within people; they’re just to get you dancing.”
With song titles like “Merry Making At My Place”, “Neon Rocks” and “Acceptable In The 80s”, you get a great idea of what you are getting. It is some sort of a Hot Chip meets A-Ha out for drinks and they get into a fight with The Streets. Or something like that…..
The album hits stores here in the US on September 4th from Almost Gold Recordings, the same label that gave Peter Bjorn and John‘s last album a stateside release. Enjoy the song “Acceptable In The 80s” below, and the video for “Merry Making At My Place.”
