You might not expect it after listening to his dark, noisy music, but A Place to Bury Strangers singer and guitarist Oliver Ackermann is one positive guy. Having cut his teeth in Virginia rock band Skywave, Ackermann made the move to Brooklyn, New York in 2003. He tried out on drums for the band that would eventually become A Place to Bury Strangers soon after his arrival (the other members asked him to switch to guitar after the first practice). As various members came and went, Ackermann’s powerful, psychedelic, noisy guitar-rock vision became the group’s driving force.

It’s March, and that means that the concert season is about to peak. Whether a band is heading to SXSW or coming back across the country or not going to Austin at all, alot of live music is “Coming To Cincinnati” in the next couple of months. Among them are David Bazan and Headlights, two acts that have a nice following nationwide and in our city as well.

It’s that time of the year again. Time for the bulk of the music industry to descend upon Austin, Texas for SXSW. And that also means it’s time for several Cincinnati bands to make the trip to the festival as well, hoping to turn a few heads that might not already know about them. From the moment they took the stage with their classic song “Skankin’ To The Beat”, Fishbone brought the furious funky fire to Covington’s Mad Hatter Monday night. On a package tour with fellow 80s ska mates The English Beat, Fishbone followed Outlaw Nation from Louisiana and Cincy’s own Pinstripes.

Pop Empire had never performed before Saturday night. Yet by 9:30, only halfway into the opening band’s set, their debut show had sold out. Early internet buzz, word of mouth and a flawless lineup were all elements that drew dozens out to see what Pop Empire was all about.
