ENS contributor Meredith Melragon was in North Carolina last month for the Hopscotch Festival and was kind enough to take some great pictures from around the fest for us.

The lineup for this year’s MidPoint Music Festival is pretty awesome. Festival organizers have done a great job generating interest and attendance with widely known and national acts like the Dodos, Cut Copy, Washed Out, Deerhoof, Gang Gang Dance, and many others. But the festival has always been about giving local and regional acts a stage as well. And this year, they’ve done a great job picking some interesting and deserving bands. Here are just a few from in and around the Tri-state area that I’m looking forward to seeing this year.

As we approach day one of Midpoint Music Fest, which starts in just 36 hours or so, there’s not much to be said about MPMF that hasn’t been said already. The festival is one of the city’s finest assets. Not only does the festival nurture local artists but it attracts three crucial types of headliners: up-and-coming buzz bands (Washed Out, Unknown Mortal Orchestra), solid top bill acts (Deerhoof, Gang Gang Dance) and seasoned veterans who have made a significant impact on today’s music (Booker T. Jones, Man or Astro-Man?).

Indigo Wild is a band that’s been on my radar for a while now, and I’m happy to announce the premiere of their music video for “Rowboats”, the first single off their debut EP due September 9th. The self-described “Columbus-born and Cincinnati-raised” folk group have steadily gained exposure playing shows in Cincinnati and in their home base of Columbus, but until now, had little more than links to their demos and a piece of candy stuffed inside plastic Easter eggs to pass out at shows (a genius marketing ploy, might I add).

As a big fan of Wilco and Woody Guthrie, the Mermaid Avenue session albums from 1998 and 2000 still stand pretty tall in my mind. Billy Bragg and Wilco collaborated after a dive into the Woody Guthrie back catalog and the results included songs that are still a fixture …

The name Sebadoh is synonymous with many modern rock classics of the 1990′s. There may not have been a band that caught the attention of the ‘indie kids’ (even though nobody called them that) like these guys did.

We’ve have talked about Alone at 3AM before here on ENS, and I have always counted myself as a fan of this criminally underrated Cincinnati group. The guys play some great Americana, in the same vein at Drive-By Truckers or Lucero, and I just got my first taste of …

Tomorrow night, Louisville’s own My Morning Jacket will be here in the Cincinnati area for a show at PNC Pavilion. It promises to be a great show, if for no other reason than the fact that MMJ is one of the best live bands around and is touring a really strong album in Circuital. But there are plenty of other reasons to get yourself down to the show tomorrow night as well, so I thought I would lay out three off the top of my head.
