Singer/guitarist Eric Earley has been writing songs since a very early age, combining the gentle spirit of his early Oregonian surroundings with his own interpretation of classic and modern rock. Over the last ten years, he’s poured some of his best songwriting into Blitzen Trapper. Confidently throwing weirdo guitar rock into intriguing alt-folk/country, the group nudged their own way into the hearts and minds of music fans with three self-released albums, culminating with the breakthrough Wild Mountain Nation.

I’m happy to be reporting from Bonnaroo again this summer, where once again the relentless summer sun is blazing hot. There’s a chance of rain in the forecast for every day this weekend, but so far no sign of any real clouds. The parking lot is also a scene of familiar chaos as thousands of people set up camp for the weekend. One of my favorite Bonnaroo statistics is that every year for four days it becomes the sixth largest city in Tennessee! The tent city rocks and reels with music, the smell of food grilling, and neighborly conversation. There are people from all over the country here this weekend. As we set up camp we began to mingle and share stories, beers, whiskey shots and laughter.

Alan Palomo’s Neon Indian project started almost by accident. But since the release Neon Indian’s widely-acclaimed debut album Psychic Chasms in 2009, Palomo’s music has taken the indie music; and increasingly, the pop music; world by storm with festival dates, high-profile collaborations, and even a special single release with Mountain Dew’s Green Label. Palomo, who was already performing refined electronic pop under the name VEGA, watched his bedroom-based weirdo synth-pop side project grow into a full-fledged touring force, complete with blog buzz and critical accolades.

I think I’ve seen Of Montreal enough times to condense their live show into a basic formula for easy explanation purposes: (video backdrop x pop art projections) + (sideshow characters + quirky fashion) = Of Montreal-sponsored LSD trip at the carnival.

The (Blood)Buzz around The National right now could not be any higher and for good reason. The New York by way of Cincinnati band has hit a new peak with the release of High Violet, their excellent new album. Our photographer extrodenaire Keith Klenowski has earned the bands trust and did all of their promotional shots this time around, including the pictures on the inside of the album.

As big fans of most things Wilco here at ENS, we were very saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Jay Bennett last year at the young age of 45. Jay was an incredibly talented musician who deserves alot of credit for records like Summerteeth and Yankee Hotel …

Remember when everyone started making lists about musicians on Twitter? It was about a year ago and we like to think we were one of the first to do it, check out that post right here. Although that list and several of the others are now badly outdated, I thought it would be fun to do a new list. Even though now on twitter you can do “lists” as well on your own. Funny how things progress eh?

We have been a supporter of the Forecastle Festival for years now, and each time a new lineup is announced, the organizers seem to ramp up its appeal. This year might be the best when it comes to bands, as evidenced by headliners like Spoon, The Flaming Lips, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Drive-By Truckers and She & Him.

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are certainly crowd pleasers. They’ve built a solid following over the last decade or so with albums of vibrant 60’s style funk and soul, as well as diligent touring. They’ve turned even more heads with their latest record, I Learned the Hard Way, which already sounds set to top “best-of-the-year†lists come December. Heading into their show at the Southgate House on Monday night, I felt a collected energy of anticipation in the crowd (consisting of everyone from young hipsters and partiers to graying hippies and soccer moms on a girls’ night out) that I’ve rarely felt at a concert, especially on a Monday night.
