Midlake has done little that has caught my attention since the release of The Trials of Van Occupanther in 2006, with the exception of a delightful collaboration with The Chemical Brothers—which turned out to be more of a cut-and-paste sing-along than an actual ‘collaboration’. Their latest album, The Courage of Others, shamelessly pencil dives into the less exciting, more enigmatic moments of Occupanther, leaving no one doubting that these guys, with every nuanced, flute-based progression, are big time fans of Jethro Tull.

If you are like me, you support the merch table at concerts as much as you can. I know whenever I go to a concert I check the merch table for some rare tour only vinyl or new t-shirt to sport. For some bands, a good night at the merch table is the difference between a successful show or not (business wise.) I guess that’s why this article really sparked my interest about what the future of the merch table looks like.

I’ve only lived in the Cincinnati area for two years, so I’ll have to use that fact as an excuse for why Tuesday’s show at the Southgate House was the first time I’ve ever been to its upstairs room, named “Juney’s Lounge.†I don’t know why it hasn’t happened before, but now I definitely hope to see more acts here.

You, You’re Awesome, aka the Electronic duo of Yusef Quotah and Kevin Bayer, is in the middle of a string of shows throughout the country. They’re headlining the May 13th opening of Radiodown, along with Pop Empire, Kasvarov, the Mighty and Banderas. Yusef recently talked to Each Note Secure’s MaryKate Moran about various shows and projects.

One ticket giveaway ends and another one begins today here on ENS. And it’s not like we would give away tickets to a show we weren’t excited about, but this one has us really stoked. The show is on a Monday night next week, so you only have a few days to get your hands on a pair of tickets to see Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings along with The Heavy.

Walking into the Frightened Rabbit show at Southgate House this past Thursday night, I had a reason to be optimistic. Their 2008 release Midnight Organ Fight was my top album of that year and their newest release Winter of Mixed Drinks has been a favorite so far this year. While being optimistic, I was worried though that my expectations were too high. After all with such great work on studio albums there were not many places this band could go except down in my eyes.
