The National Perform “Terrible Love” For Fallon

Last night, The National performed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. But this was not just any performance, it was the unveiling of another new song! Yes, we are big fans here at ENS, so getting to hear another new tune from the now titled upcoming album High Violet.

Introducing – No No Knots

2010 is turning out to be a pretty exciting year for new music and new bands already and today, we have another act to introduce you to. No No Knots are a Cincinnati group that is starting to get some attention after a couple of live shows and whether or not you have heard the name, you probably don’t know much about them yet.

An easy way to sum up this new outfit is that it is a new project of Cincinnati singer Molly Sullivan and features members of Peter Adams band, The Nocturnal Collective and The Happy Maladies. But the way I prefer to describe this effort is in a simple phrase, “untapped potential.” I say that before hearing a single note or lyric from No No Knots, and base it solely on the collective talent that is assembled here. As great at Peter Adams is as a songwriter and artist in general, I was always equally impressed by the company he kept. In addition, Molly Sullivan seems like an artist that is easy to enjoy in a solo format, but becomes a star backed by a band like this.

Some of these thoughts were confirmed after watching a few video clips of the band performing during a recent Southgate House show, but I am still calling this effort “untapped potential” until I hear some studio recordings. That said, you should certainly check out a those video clips right here, and let us know what you think of No No Knots. Here is one of my early favorites.

Rise Up Haiti Benefit Show Tonight!

Some great Cincinnati artists, both musical and visual, are contributing to this show next Friday here in town. Check out the release below, along with a piece CNN did on the Restavek Foundation.

Tonight, February 12 at the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center in Covington, Kentucky, the Greater Cincinnati creative community will come together for “Rise Up Haiti,” a fundraising celebration to help end child slavery in Haiti.

There are approximately 300,000 children living in slavery in Haiti, where they are known as “Restaveks.” All funds raised at “Rise Up Haiti” will go to ending this practice. “Rise Up Haiti” will feature a unique collaboration of music and visual arts, with four local bands performing live, a photography exhibition with actual images of Haitian child slaves, and a silent auction of 10commissioned, one-of-a-kind pieces done by area artists.

The photography exhibition will feature the works of Jonathan Robert Willis, and his touching personal expression of beautiful Restavek faces. The concert will include Ric Hordinski, Rob Fetters, Kim Taylor and Me or the Moon. The silent auction will present a lively artistic range of views of hope and inspiration, spoken through the artists’ original talents.The event will also feature a full cash bar. All proceeds benefit the Jean Cadet Restavek Foundation, dedicated to abolishing child slavery in Haiti. For more information about the founda-tion, check out Restavekfreedom.com

St. Vincent – Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood Video

A great and hilarious new video from St. Vincent today to share. The song is from Actor, her excellent 2009 release. It’s not only one of my favorite songs from the album “Laughing With A Mouth Of Blood” but the new video is really great as well.

The vid features Fred Armisen from Saturday Night Live fame and takes place at Women and Women First, “the most feminist of all feminist book stores.”

Pomegranates Everything Is Alive Vinyl Release

It’s been a wild ride for the Pomegranates guys over the past couple of years. In that time they have released two albums and an EP, played dozens and dozens of live shows across the country and even had their second album, Everybody Come Outside!, released in the UK by Heist Or Hit Records.

To add another notch to the belt of one of the finest pop bands in Cincinnati, they guys are putting their debut album,Everything Is Alive out on vinyl in March with help from Broken Circles Records. Yep, on March 5th, the Pomegranates will be doing a special Vinyl Release show at Southgate House in Newport. This is exciting for fans of the band and of the vinyl format of course, and it’s also another reason to celebrate one of our favorite bands in Cincinnati.

Pre-orders start on February 26th, as stated in the poster above, and it will come in black, red or green wax. Pretty exciting!

What New Songs From The National Will Be On The Album In May?

The internet was chattering big time yesterday after Cincinnati ex-pats The National made a big announcement. The guys have a new album and announced a handful of tour dates to go along with it. Since The National are one of our favorite bands of the past decade, we are pretty excited about the follow up to Boxer this May and wanted to not only let you know, but do a little speculating as well.

We speculated last year about the new record, but now that the date has been announced, what can we expect from the album? Well, the official press release doesn’t really give too many details other than the tour dates and that the record will be out in May. So what songs can we expect on the new disc? The guys have been testing out several new songs in the past year or so, here are a few we are almost certain make the cut.

~~“Blood Buzz Ohio”~~ “Love Buzz, Ohio” – This is a song that has been part of the live setlist at most shows in the past 8-12 months. The guys played it as headliner during the Pitchfork Festival last summer and you can watch some video of the song being performed below. - Odds it ends up on the new album 5/2 -

“Big Red Machine” – This tune has actually already been recorded and released as a part of the Dark Was The Night compilation last year, but I think there is a chance a new version of it ends up on the new album. Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Aaron Dessner are credited on the compilation, but Matt took the stage to perform the tune with Justin last year at Radio City Music Hall during the Dark Was The Night concert. – Odds it ends up on the new album 12/1 -

“Vanderlye, Cry Baby Cry” – Another live set staple in recent months, I’m not sure if this title is “Vanderlye Cry Baby” or “Vanderlye, Cry Baby Cry” but I have seen both out there on the web. And some are calling it “Vanderlylle” but I’m not in agreement on that. Here is a live performance of the song, what do you think the song title is? Also, in the video, check out Bryce playing this guitar with a bow. - Odds it ends up on the new album 3/1 -

“The Runaway” - Maybe my favorite new tune in the bunch, this not only has a confirmed title but also a really great recording and video to go along with it. The National performed the tune during a session with Studio Q in Canada. It was untitled at the time, but has since been confirmed as “The Runaway.” - Odds it ends up on the new album 5/2-

***UPDATE*** Here are some words from Matt regarding songs on the new album.

Pitchfork: Can you name any of the songs that will be on it?

MB: It’s hard to tell because we’re still going to chop some. One of the contenders is “Love Buzz, Ohio”. There’s one called “Romantic Comedy”, there’s one called “L.A. Cathedral”, there’s one called “Quiet Company”, and there’s one called “Runaway”. There’s a bunch that are untitled. There’s a few that we’ve played live before. Most of those will make it, but I think we’re still going to chop a couple of songs, and we don’t really know which ones we’re going to chop yet.

For a long time, we thought “Love Buzz, Ohio” was going to be a big, important song on this record, but just last week we were all thinking maybe it doesn’t even belong on the record. It’s so weird how quick we shift around the idea of what kind of record this is going to be. That song has had the potential to be good, but we just haven’t found it yet. We haven’t quite found its heart yet. But now we’ve jumped in and out of it and have done a few things, maybe stripped it way back.

It’s also going to be interesting to see if any of the bands friends turn up on the new release. We already know the Dessners have a list of friends that reads like a Pitchfork Best New Music archive. So who would you like to see the band collaborate with on this record? St. Vincent, Sufjan Stevens, Bon Iver, Dirty Projectors, David Byrne or maybe Joanna Newsom? Well, it’s possible. Heartless Bastards All Over Your TV This Weekend

Most Cincinnatians remember the late night TV debut of Heartless Bastards last year, when lead singer Erika Wennerstrom quickly corrected David Letterman after he stated the band hailed from Austin. Of course, Heartless Bastards do currently hail from the live music capitol of the world, but their roots are deeply entrenched in their hometown still, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Well this weekend, television hosts get another chance to do their homework as the Bastards will be on your tube twice pushing their sound and 2009 album The Mountain. Tonight they make an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live and tomorrow night they take share an hour of Austin City Limits with The Avett Brothers.

Both are not to be missed, so set your DVRs just in case you have plans.

Cincinnati Concert Reminder – The Fiery Furnaces Return To Cincinnati

Over the past few years, The Fiery Furnaces have suddenly become an band that makes Cincinnati a regular tour stop. We have been around to see them play three times in the past three years, each time with a new album in tow, and now we get the Friedberger siblings again this winter, while they are out on a jaunt promoting their record from 2009, I’m Going Away.

They last stopped in Cincinnati as a part of the Fountain Square Indie Rock Summer Series last August, and we were there enjoying things. At the time though, I felt like they were best suited for the confines of Southgate House, and that is where you can catch them tonight along with openers Drug Rug. The show is set to start around 8pm and is 15$.

These United States Unearth Old Video

The boys of These United States never fail to impress me with their enthusiasm and talent. After all, the guys have released three kick ass albums in a pretty short period of time and the rumor is they are already knee deep in album number four. So it’s no surprise that I really got a kick out of this new video from the band.

The video is made to look like it’s set in 1993 and the guys are done up in all the relevant gear from the era (I think I like Tom’s look the most). Check out a fun video for their song “The Important Thing” which was a standout from Everything Touches Everything.

RJD2 Returns With The Colossus

Columbus, Ohio native RJD2 is back and ready for 2010, and in a big way. And when I say a “big way”, I mean this cat has been really busy preparing for the new year. Not only does he have a brand new album set for release on January 19th, but RJD2 also recently released a pretty cool IPhone Remix App as well. The application, called Touch Mix, was announced on his website Monday as part of his “Monday Madness” series, telling fans, “you can make your own mixes on the fly with 5 cuts, and also get a sneak preview of another track from The Colossus.”

The Colossus has us pretty excited too, it’s his first full length release since 2007’s The Third Hand and if the stuff we have heard already is any indication, it might be his best. In addition to the new record and IPhone app, there are also a slew of tour dates upcoming, and included in the mix is a stop at the Southgate House on February 5th. Come back here for more news on that soon, but for now check out a free tune from The Colossus and another new one via video.
