Fans of vinyl records probably are already very familiar with Record Store Day, which happens once a year and is like Christmas for collectors. But some might not be as familiar with Record Store Day’s cousin, Black Friday. It’s not only an opportunity to get out and buy some vinyl exclusives but also to support local businesses while so many others are swarming the malls and other big box retailers at the same time.

If you want to shop local in Cincinnati, we recommend Shake It Records in Northside of course. Once again, Shake It is doing a canned food drive this year on Black Friday, so bring some canned goods and get 10% off your bill. The canned goods benefits CAIN ( Churches Active In Northside ). Some exciting news hitting this week, as we got word that the guys from The Calm Blue Sea are back..officially. The guys took some time off but have actually been back together playing live for awhile now, and they recently joined forces with one of our favorite new independent labels, Modern Outsider. If you have kept up with ENS or my time with WOXY.com you know I’m a big Calm Blue Sea fan. I found out about them a few months before SXSW 2009 and made a point to book them for one of our live sessions that week. The band were one of the best live acts to come through our studios that week, playing tunes from their excellent self titled album.

And now, along with the new partners Modern Outsider Records (home to other ENS faves like UME) the band is releasing that album on vinyl for the first time! The pre-orders just went live and you have a few options to choose from when ordering. The album is not only remastered but also includes the previously unreleased songs “Fire” and “Man Of Dangerous Dreams.” So get on over to the shop and get this album on vinyl (and snag a t-shirt too), you won’t regret it.

The Calm Blue Sea – Literal (Live on WOXY.com / SXSW 2009)

As reported earlier today by Consequence of Sound, The National are doing yet another re-issue of an old item, on vinyl. After re-issuing their first two releases from their time with Brassland, the Ohio natives are set to re-issue 2004′s Cherry Tree EP as well. People here in Cincinnati may remember that the original was pressed partially on red wax and partially on black, and that local record store Shake It Records helped put it out.

The reissue, due for release on June 28th, will be limited to 3,000 copies, 500 of which will be pressed on a special edition red vinyl. The other 2,500 copies will be pressed on black vinyl.

According to Brassland, the red vinyl will be exclusively available via the label’s online store. Also, both the red and black editions will contain the third part of the triptych poster that was packaged in last year’s pressings of the first and second record. Below, you can stream a track off Cherry Tree in the form of “About Today” (via Brassland’s Bandcamp).

Brassland also tells us that there are plans for a box set featuring the vinyl reissues of the self-titled debut, Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, and Cherry Tree, though nothing is official. In the meantime, the label will be celebrating its 10th anniversary with a series of upcoming giveaways, so it’d be a good idea to bookmark their website, Twitter, and Facebook.

Ok, so it’s pretty obvious we are geeked for Record Store Day tomorrow, and as it turns out, so are our friends from the MusicNOW festival, which is only a month away now. Tomorrow, if you are at Shake It Records and purchase some vinyl or CD’s with a MusicNOW connection, you could win tickets to the festival.

We have three pairs of one day tickets to give away tomorrow, and here is how you can get your hands on them.

Step 2: Buy some vinyl or a CD of an artist with a MusicNOW tie, this year or another year. It’s been a wild ride for the Pomegranates guys over the past couple of years. In that time they have released two albums and an EP, played dozens and dozens of live shows across the country and even had their second album, Everybody Come Outside!, released in the UK by Heist Or Hit Records.

To add another notch to the belt of one of the finest pop bands in Cincinnati, they guys are putting their debut album,Everything Is Alive out on vinyl in March with help from Broken Circles Records. Yep, on March 5th, the Pomegranates will be doing a special Vinyl Release show at Southgate House in Newport. This is exciting for fans of the band and of the vinyl format of course, and it’s also another reason to celebrate one of our favorite bands in Cincinnati.

Pre-orders start on February 26th, as stated in the poster above, and it will come in black, red or green wax. Pretty exciting!

Here at ENS, we love vinyl. We buy it even when we shouldn’t and we listen to it whenever we get the chance, so we always have an eye out for what is new on wax. And of course, when local artist make vinyl their format of choice, things get even more exciting.

The Chocolate Horse – We Don’t Stand On Ceremony – The band’s second album is great, as we mentioned earlier this week, and you can’t get it on CD. So pick it up on vinyl, it’s worth it.

June 20th will mark the very first Vinyl Saturday brought to you by the same folks responsible for Record Store Day. There are four very limited releases for that day, and thanks to our friends at Shake It Records, we have the details for each.

WILCO : This is a special 7” single being released 10 days before new album, WILCO
(The Album) comes out on 6/30. This is a limited (3800) run of a 7” that includes these
tracks: “You Never Know” b/w “Unlikely Japan” (an early 2003 version of the track
“Impossible Germany,” previously unreleased.)

GREEN DAY : There is a vinyl version of the CD Single “Know Your Enemy” with a
street date of 6/20. This vinyl is limited to 5000 pieces, and is NUMBERED. The b-side
is an unreleased studio track called “Hearts Collide”.

MODEST MOUSE : There is a series of 7” singles being released (the first of which
streets next week). The second in the series is scheduled for a 6/23 street date. Sony
is allowing us to sell it on 6/20. HOWEVER, because of the street date, there is a
chance that the piece will not arrive in time for 6/20 sales. This second piece is called
Autumn Beds and the B-Side is “Whale Song”.

PETE YORN /SCARLETT JOHANSSEN : These two are releasing an album in Sept
through Rhino and we have an advance 7” with a Duet from both of them and a Pete
Yorn demo on the other side.
