Its an interesting thing watching potential right before your eyes. In some ways its like gazing into a crystal ball with a glimpse of what is to come and in other ways its a in your face commentary on lack of experience. David Vandervelde has tons of potential, but understandably, is still working through the kinks. And that may be one way of summing up his trip through Cincinnati yesterday.
When David and his band announced at the WOXY Lounge Act yesterday that this was really was a “really great way to get warmed up”, I wasnt surprised. Lots of bands get into the groove in the studio before that nights show. But, he really
meant it. You see, this was to be the 2nd time David and his bandmates had played together. Ever. And while this certainly wasnt a groundbreaking first show, I certainly felt fortunate enough to catch him this early on.

So, back to the potential vs. lack of experience thing. Its obvious that David is an amazing talent, he takes 70s rock and wears it like a badge of honor. He also is bringing back the guitar solo and in a big way. I was very impressed by his skills on the guitar, and it even seemed at times, no offense to the other two band members, that he could have easily gone it alone on stage. But you take the good with the lack of experience factor and end up with a few things you wouldnt get with a band that has a few more tour dates under their belt. Things like only a 25 minute headlining set. This was in part due to the fact that David’s voice was failing him, which could have been the result of “letting it all hang out” more than once that day (see Lounge Act). But, I can hardly fault the kid, hes got way more on the positive side than the negative, and the latter will likely be worked out once his upcoming tour wraps up.
See the remainder of David Vandervelde’s tour dates below, make sure you check him out if hes in your town, some additional photos below as well from the show and the lounge act.

Couldn’t agree more about Vandervelde’s potential. I was definitely not expecting the virtuoso work on guitar. It really makes me wish the record didn’t have all the production layered on. I mean, for a minute there, I really thought I confused him with someone else because his performance was such a contrast from his studio sound(a good thing).
