Upon my first listen to the debut album from Chicagos David Vandervelde its hard not to notice the amount of 70s influence on his sound. While the 22 year old didnt live a day in the decade his music leans heavily on towards the T-Rex and Marc Bolan similarities, which have been added to about every review of him ive seen, but its hard not to start there. Im also feeling a definate Supergrass vibe as well.
Vandervelde however, is not a one trick pony and manages to play just about every album on this record despite some assistance from many, including former Wilco member Jay Bennett. The album was recorded at Bennett’s house and he plays bass on a couple tracks in addition to writing the first song, “Nothing No”.
The album is titled, “The Moonstation House Band” and is out Jan 23rd from Secretly Canadian. Here are two tracks to whet your appetite.
