Well, its turns out there is indeed life after Luna for Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips. The former members of the pop outfit that had a great run of success in the 90′s and early 00′s and have been busy since the breakup in 2004. But this duos collaboration actually begins before the Luna retirement as Wareham and Phillips released an album in 2003 titled “L’Avventura” on Jetset records and an EP not long after in 2003, “Sonic Souvenirs”. The two have also been busy doing film scores, including the Academy Award nominated “The Squid and the Whale.”
Fast forward to late 06 which found the two recording again and prepping a new album with another EP release centered around the first single from the upcoming full length. The single, “Words you used to say” sufficiently whet the appetites of Luna fans and now the full length, “Back Numbers” is ready to see a release. Zoe Records is handling the couple this time around with Tony Visconti back for production duties. The album is soft and sweet, with the delicate vocals of Phillips throughout, the track, “You Turned My Head Around” see Britta raising her game a notch and is my favorite track on the album so far. Wareham adds a sobering touch to the elegance on several tracks as well and the pairing is nothing short of perfect.
So while the music may not be your thing, its hard not to appreciate the synergy between these two, and the maturation as a duo is appreciable as well. It wont make us forget the Luna days, but it does promise that we havent heard the last from Dean and Britta.
