I was starting to wonder if we were going to hear anything new from Eat Sugar, and now we have it. The band that burst onto the
Cincinnati scene here a couple years ago with their debut EP of songs, played around town (and continue to), but were sans an official release to peddle at the merch table. That’s not to say they needed something to sell, but as a fan, I wanted something to buy!
The band are retooled but most remain the same as you remember them from their debut, and have a new seven song EP to drop on us all at the end of the month. The new release is as fresh sounding as anything I have heard come out of the Queen City in awhile, and the one word I keep coming back to when I think to describe it is “urgent”. The lyrics have a certain urgency to them, and I think the music itself unleashes a feeling of urgency for the listener as well. An urgency to dance, an urgency to tap your foot, an urgency to take up keyboards because they sound so good. Whatever it is, I think It’s Not Our Responsibility really pushes things to the forefront and pushes them right now.
The band employed John Schmersal of Enon to record and produce the new album, and you can hear some Enon influences within the disc as a result. The EP is mostly up and streaming on the bands myspace page already, and will be available for purchase at the end of May. Until then, sample this new track….
