The trio out of Sunderland, England that call themselves Field Music don’t know the effect that “Tones of Town” should have on our indie ears. It appears that after the 2005 self titled debut release that flew under most radars, Field Music is ready to take the next step. Im quite sure its already the best pop album ive heard so far in the new year.
You see, the pop harmony, though seemingly simple and gooey in its essence, is really not the easiest thing to duplicate in a fashion that is unique and even repeatedly digestable. Field Music manages to not only provide the sugary elements that make a great pop song but also the story, atmosphere and production that make this album what it is.
The harmonies aside, this is an incredibly well written record as well. I especially am enjoying the “common man” approach on tunes like “Working to Work” and “A House is Not A Home.” So, the next time you go to reach for that new Shins album you downloaded 3 months ago, instead take a chance on this pop album, which really, for what its worth, just might be superior. You can get your grubby hands on the new album January 22nd in the UK and February 20th in the states from Memphis Industries.
