I had a chance this week to throw some questions to the guys over at Mind Ignition, a new website here in Cincinnati specializing in videos of live performances. So take this opportunity to “get to know” the Mind Ignition Channel. I wont describe it more, transcript below…….
ENS ~ Why and when did you choose to start Mind Ignition and who else is involved? Also, who is involved in the project and a talk a bit about their backgrounds.
MI ~ Our backgrounds are diverse and lengthy in the world of the arts, music, and audio/video production. Bill McCarthy, Alex Lusht, and I all met at a recording arts school in Chillicothe, Ohio called The Recording Workshop. I attended the school straight out of highschool and later became an instructor there for about 7 years. Bill was a fairly regular studio musician at the school while he was attending The Ohio University in Athens and I got to know him through one of my co-workers. Bill received a degree in Communications and had interned with video production companies around the Cincinnati area before we met. Alex Lusht also attended the Recording Workshop after he had spent many years as a touring musician and then finishing his degree in the recording arts at Penn State University. To make a long story short, we all wound up in a band together called Chief’s Tale and toured the country a bit in the late 90’s. We got to know each other pretty well from living in a van together and working together towards producing and promoting our band and always knew that we wanted to work together.
Tiffany Lusht (Alex’s future wife) attended the Ohio State University and was heavily involved in the theater scene in Columbus and also did a fair amount of modeling before moving to NYC in the mid 90’s. In New York she gained more experience acting and directing. She also formed a theater company called JABOA (Just A Bunch Of Artists) and ran the full gamet of putting up entire productions in the heart of the theater world.
When Chief’s Tale eventually disbanded in 2000, Alex moved to NYC and started working at the legendary Bottom Line Club where he handled the live sound duties for a ton of great artists and gained a lot of experience. He and Tiffany ended up working together through JABOA, and eventually falling in love and getting married. Bill and I both moved to Cincinnati after the band and started doing audio work in a studio located outside of Dayton under the guise of Mind Ignition Unlimited along with fellow partners Jim Hansbauer and Bordley Palk. We always kept in touch with Alex and Tiffany up in NYC. When they left NYC after 9/11 they eventually decided to come join up with us in Cincinnati.
All of our individual talents really benefit each other and we decided to form an LLC in late 2003. We’ve spent the most the past three years doing service based projects such as album recordings and audio for video and film. The video side of things has filtered in as we’ve gained more and more experience in that realm and Tiffany has headed up that department. We started doing video shoots for local events and even shot our own short film in 2005. Jim and Bordley have since moved on to other projects or geographical locations so Mind Ignition is currently the four of us…Alex, Bill, Tiffany, and myself.
I don’t think there was ever any discussion on why we all decided to start working together, it just sort of seemed natural because we all seem to have the same goals in life and really dug being involved in projects together. I must say that it is a true honor to have met these people and to have the chance to try to build this thing with them. We are more than just partners, we are true friends and have been through the ringer together so it is a really special vibe to be a part of.
ENS ~ Tell me a little more about the website and its features and member benefits.
MI ~ The Mind Ignition Channel website (aka On The MIC) has been a dream of ours for years. I think when we first started hinting about it many years ago, we all kind of had the foresight that the internet and the current streams of entertainment, information, and learning usually associated with television would someday start to merge together and we would eventually end up with those things becoming totally on demand via the internet. We all seemed to agree that we wanted to eventually have our very own “channel” to house our creations and now we have taken the steps towards making it a reality.
When we finally set out to design the site we looked at a lot of different ways to put it all together. Truely there are so many ways for you to present all of the content online that you can have a lot of fun with the design, layout, and the functionality of the site, but the #1 most important thing to all of us is the content itself.
We wanted our site to be as clean and easy to work with as possible (at least to start) and we wanted to display the highest quality video that we could, so we spent months testing it and currently are offering up as clear of a format as anything else we can find.
It just so happened that some of the “playlist” scripting technologies and capabilities in the php world had just become available and we realized we had the opportunity to allow our viewers to save their own playlists much like they can with other non-internet based entertainment applications such as ITunes. We definitely wanted to offer playlist capabilities so we added that in. If you become a member of our site, then you can even save and post your own playlists for others to view. We hope this will become more and more fun as we add more and more video to the site. I think you will start seeing this concept being used heavily across the internet really soon. You already can see this sort of format on CNN’s Pipeline and even many local television stations’ websites with their news stories right now.
The most important idea and feature of our website, in our eyes, is exclusive content. Stuff you won’t be able to witness anywhere else, but on our site. There are thousands of sites that are now offering up video content, but many of them depend on “user generated content” to create their content pool and that usually seems to end up in video minutia and legal problems. There is certainly something to be said for having the ability to pull up a clip of just about anything you can dream up just by typing it in such as on sites like YouTube or Revvor and I think people will always want to check out crazy home movies or find that funny clip from the Ali G Show, etc. However, we knew we didn’t want to try and exist as another video uploading and hosting site. We are all taking this risk together in order to be artists and enjoy what we are creating and we feel that there is enough of a market out there that eventually we can build a fanbase large enough to support us as long as we put out an entertaining or informative product. We may not have a hundred thousand videos any time soon, but at least we will have some shows with some really cool musical artists whom we feel that you really should get to know. And the only place you’ll be able to find that performance will be on the Mind Ignition Channel.
One of the next steps for the site is to add on the “download” feature. We’ve been taking our time with this because of the functionality and the legal demands that come along with selling units of intellectual property. We hope that this becomes not only a means to help support ourselves and the artists, but also a new avenue for giving to charity as well.
The “On The Mic Live” show is also simply the start of our endeavours. We have quite a few projects and ideas up our sleeves for the future and can’t wait to get to them, but it is all a matter of time and budget.
ENS ~ So far, what are some of the bands and artists you have worked with for Mind Ignition?
MI ~ Wow, we have been so lucky and blessed when you examine the pool of talented artists that we have been able to work with through Mind Ignition. Some of it comes from the connections we already had when starting this venture, but much of it has to do with the non-stop hard work and the heavy value that my partners and I put on networking. I’m really proud to be a part of such a group and what we’ve accomplished thus far.
To do some name dropping, I think it is probably best if I just give you a list. I also will refer to the entire scope of Mind Ignition and not just the artists that you have seen on the channel so far. Through offering up music recording and live sound reinforcement services along with live concert video services we’ve had the chance to work with UMELT, Los Straitjackets, Gran Bel Fisher, Blessed Union of Souls, Pyschodots, Freekbass, Mike Gordon (formerly. of Phish), Sundayrunners, Bronson Arroyo, Paperclip, Dawn Kinnard, The Stapletons, Jarvis, The Dirty Royals, The Goshorn Brothers, Vinyltones, Ric Hordinski, Heavy Weather, Staggering Statistics, NYC Smoke, MOTH, The Screaming Mimes, Noah Hunt & 420 Allstars, Ghostmonster, Kevin Fox Band, G. Burton and the Hyde Park Outrage, Jayne Sachs Band, Captains of Industry, Oval Opus, Paul Otten Band, Spookfloaters, The Muckrakers, Tickled Pink, WorldwidE, Andy Mullens, Goodwen, Dangerous Jim and the Slims, Mr. Boogieman, Carl Clark, The Cincinnati Youth Musical Theater Ensemble, and a plethera of others along with the artists directly involved in the video content on our site such as Katie Reider, Kim Taylor, Noctaluca, Cari Clara, 500 Miles to Memphis, and The Turnbull ACs so far. We also have a great list of artists that we are slated to work with in the near future, but I’m going to have to leave that undisclosed for now as a lot of the possibilities are yet to be confirmed, but I must say that we are all extremely excited right now.
ENS ~ Do you plan to only shoot Cincinnati artists and keep the business in the city or to also branch out to national recording artists that come through town?
MI ~ With “On The MIC Live” we want to have the opportunity to shoot the best artists, on the best stage, in front of the best crowd, with the best gear, all while the stars are aligned and the entire world has stopped to watch the perfomance. The perfect show…ya know? Why not? That is our dream with this project. It doesn’t matter if the artist comes from another solar system or if they reside in Loveland, we want the opportunity to capture the show. We do have a pretty sizeable list of artists that we are desiring to have on our show.
None of us are currently independently wealthy and we are making all of this happen with what we can shake out of our pockets along with some help from a few big hearted compadres and a few pounds of pure desire. Hopefully, down the road, with some focus, sweat, and with some extra elbow grease, we will be able to have created something special enough with “On The MIC Live” that we will be enabled to work with all the artists on our list. You have to have the dream right? We certainly do and we also have the drive to try it, which is just awesome to be a part of.
Luckily for us, Cincinnati (in my opinion) is home to what is the most unbelievably diverse and kick ass music scene as there is anywhere in the world. Especially per capita, so we have a ton of great artists to choose from and they don’t need to be flown in or perfectly scheduled to be in our area in order to be on our show. I’m not just saying that either, I truly believe it. Cincinnati’s music scene is awesome.
On the other hand, the last thing we want is for our show to be pigeon-holed as a “local” tv show or website. We will definitely make an assertive effort to diversify our talent pool in regards to their geographical home base as soon as we possibly can… but, with that said we won’t sacrifice the ability to capture great artists and performances while we have plenty of talent around here.
ENS ~ What is the ultimate goal of Mind Ignition?
The ultimate goal for Mind Ignition in general is to provide ourselves the opportunity to produce works of art that we enjoy and can be proud of, while hopefully touching other people outside our group with that art.
Art is such a subjective thing that just about any of it can be argued over and dismissed depending on one’s feelings so I don’t know if there is any measure of success that we are trying to accomplish with the art itself as long as we are happy with it. Maybe some sort of recognition for our efforts down the road would be nice, but right now that is the last thing on our mind.
In many ways we are all very happy with what we have done so far and are loving every second of what we are doing and hope to get better at what we do as we do it, thus I could say it would be great to just have a continuation of what we are doing along with maybe the opportunity for some new directions and a bigger budget. However, I don’t wanna lie, we certainly all have dreams of creating the most sought after and viewed web channel in the known universe. which also miraculously brings world unity and peace along with cures for disease. Yep, that would be pretty stinkin’ cool too!
Either way, we still have a long long way to go, a lot to learn, and a lot of fun to be had while we do it. We hope that everyone we meet along the way will want to be a part of the journey with us and now you can very easily by going to our site and staying tuned to what we are doing and maybe drop us a line every now and then.
