Idlewild - Make Another World

It has been quite a ride already for the Scottish five piece Idlewild. It’s hard to believe that the bands first proper release was all the way back in 1999 and that it has been a full decade since they began recording together. I guess they just seem very young still to me. That could be due to the fact that Idlewild has never been able to fully break through here in the US. What seemed like the best opportunity to do so back in 2002, when after their incredible and still my favorite album of theirs, 100 Broken Windows was being praised just about everywhere overseas, and the band headed west to the US for their first national tour as headliners.

The tour was not met with the same ferver that Broken Windows received back home though, and it seemed to affect the appeal of the calm and more relaxed tunes from The Remote Part, the next album. I remember attending a show of theirs that year in Columbus with about 30 other people in attendance, not quite the crowd the band had hoped for. Not to mention being a part of a label, Parlophone/EMI, who really had no idea how to correctly market the band for the eight years Idlewild was a part of its roster certainly didn’t help things.

With the recent split from Parlophone, die hard fans held out hope that the band might enjoy a new sense of energy and bring a fresh face to their next effort. And really, that is exactly what they have done with Make Another World.

Not only does the new album bring back the more rollicking style that pushed Idlewild to the indie forefront to begin with, but it is lyrically raw all over again. Roddy Womble sounds renewed but yet not satisfied with the current state he is finding himself and his band in. It is really the kind of album that I did not expect from the band at this point in their careers, but it is exactly what they needed to do. Standout tracks include, “In Competition For The Worst Time”, “No Emotion” and “If It Takes You Home.” All of which come highly recommended. You can now find the band on Sequel Records, a division of Sanctuary, in the UK.
