Iron & Wine and The Head & The Heart hit up the Madison in Covington Saturday night, check out this preview from @terriblesounds….
You may have first his voice on a burned mix CD someone gave you in mid-2002; his hushed voice whispering the lyrics to “Such Great Heights.” But Sam Beam of the indie-folk outfit Iron and Wine has been cranking out records for the better part of a decade. What’s left to say about the group that hasn’t already been said in the blogosphere? Iron and Wine has released some of the touchstone indie albums of . . .well . . . ever.
But Beam isn’t sitting back combing his beard, polishing his banjo, releasing the same album over and over, and collecting the checks. Earlier this year, Iron and Wine released Kiss Each Other Clean, their first album in four years. It was a pretty drastic change of pace: favoring electrified pop over their historic primitive folk. The album was challenging for fans, while still being widely appealing and even getting some Billboard chart love.
This Saturday, they’ll be gracing the Madison Theater in Covington with their current brand of indie-folk-70’s-pop. Basically, they were indie while you were still getting rides to school from your older brother. You owe it to yourself to check them out when you have the chance. Who knows . . . maybe next time through these parts they’ll be on to hip-hop or dj mashups. It’s how the blogosphere turns.

I caught the Head & the Heart’s free set at Shake It Saturday afternoon, and while I wished it lasted a bit longer (they played for about 30 min.), that was one fantastic set. Couldn’t believe my luck that they played “Down in the Valley”, my favorite song on the album.
And if you somehow missed them, they will e back in Cincinnati in August, when they open for the Decemberists at the PNC Pavilion. Do NOT miss them this tme around! They are fantastic.
