Our little boys are all growns up. Thats the way it feels to see so many people fall in love with J Roddy Walston and The Business. Finally. We say that because it feels like for years I was one of those dudes that annoyed you about J Roddy and his amazing live act. I told you that if you saw him live you wouldn’t regret it and would be an instant fan. I badgered you about their recorded stuff too, how it was the next best thing to the live act and even allowed the guys to take on new challenges that you wouldn’t be able to experience in a raucous bar.
We even brought J Roddy to town once, and did our best to convince you to come see him live and be changed. Well, some of you did, and some of you probably got sick of me selling you on these guys, but it sure is great to see them finally getting their due. The band signed to Vagrant Records earlier this year and just released what is being billed as their “debut” full length. Yeah, it’s a debut just like those bands that get best ‘new’ artist nominations at the Grammys are new. But still, it’s going to be new to alot of ears, and just like the first time we heard the guys do their thing, people are convinced, this is the best bar band in America.
So move on outta the way Hold Steady and make way for J Roddy and the biz. Because the new album and the live show are not the end of the journey for the band or for us, but just the beginning of the next chapter. I’m raising my glass to the guys today in words, because they are all growns up, or more fittingly, “A Full Grown Man.”
