It’s a really great day to get out and hit up your local indie record store today. With releases from Ted Leo, Modest Mouse, Andrew Bird and many more, you should really make it a point to get shopping. One of the other releases today that may have flown below or around your radar is the new one from Jesse Malin. The former D-Generation east coast punkster drops his third full length on us today, “Glitter in the Gutter.”
I may be alone when I say this, but this album is really freaking good. It’s true, it seems like Malin has taken the really great things from his first two albums, which seemed inconsistent and at times confusing, and made what is easily his best record to date. It’s the first time Malin has strayed from his New York comfort zone to record as he did so It could be in part to the excellent cast of contributors. The album not only features lots of collaboration with drinking buddy Ryan Adams but also boasts a guitar work from Josh Homme, a cover of The Replacements song “Bastards Of Young”, some backing vocals from Jakob Dylan, and a duet with The Boss himself, Bruce Springsteen.
But, it’s really the tracks without too much company that seem to impress the most. From the catchiness of “In The Modern World” and “Black Haired Girl” to the reflective “Tomorrow Tonight”, Jesse Malin has truly become one of the better street rock poets to come along in awhile. Which is of course where the collab with Springsteen fits in, and “Broken Radio” is certainly a ballad worth your attention as well.
It’s as if Malin has finally been able to piece it all together and make a career defining record with Glitter in the Gutter. Jesse may not be the next Springsteen, but he has certainly taken all the right cues from artists like Bruce in order to create this own slot in the history of street rockers. Here are two samples from Glitter in the Gutter, in stores today.
