I have a recap of day two that will be up tomorrow most likely of this years Lollapalooza festival, but first off I wanted to talk a bit about Wilco and their set last night. The hometown boys were pitted playing on the opposite side of where Rage Against the Machine were bringing out the worst in some. And while there were fewer on the Wilco side of things, I am betting not one of us regrets making that decision.
The band came out on stage wearing brand new custom tailored sequins suits, colorful and shiny. Jeff claimed that the had been “doing a lot of sewing to get ready for this show” and they broke into a brilliant 90 minute set. The photo above of Jeff is one of many that Brooklyn Vegan photog Zach Dilgard snapped. (see them all here).
For a longtime Wilco fan, the set was the cherry on top of a great day at Grant Park. And as someone who has seen them several times, it was great to hear some rarities pop up like when John Stirrat stepped in front of the mic and played lead singer for the tune, “It’s Just That Simple” and I loved hearing songs like “Can’t Stand It”, ‘Spiders”, and “Hate It Here” again live. And of course a brand new song, which Tweedy said was a “WIP” (work in progress) and I am now seeing is titled “One Wing”.
Jeff later asked if anyone saw Radiohead the night before, and of course everyone had, he said that while they were great, it was apparent they had not been “doing any sewing.” I went into the performance just happy to see Wilco this year since it had been since last summer for me. And despite my bias, I left confident that not only was it the right choice to make over Rage, but my favorite set of the weekend.
Check out video of the new song, “One Wing” below, as well as a download.
