Meloy before December

Colin Meloy
Before Colin Meloy was heading up the indie superstar Decemberists, he was fronting the band Tarkio. The name of the band is a small town in Western Montana. The band was from Meloy’s college days at the University of Montana in Missoula; they are now defunct.Tarkio had a short existence, and was made up of

Colin Meloy (vocals, guitar, songwriter)
Gibson Hartwell (guitar)
Louis Stein (bass guitar)
Brian Collins (drummer)
Kevin Suggs (pedal steel)

Meloy said of the early days…

“We [Tarkio] had aspirations of being able to base ourselves as a band out of Missoula, Montana, like Low is from Duluth and Modest Mouse is from Issaquah [Washington], but I think we pretty quickly discovered that the reason why those bands succeeded was that were within an hour’s drive from a major metropolitan area.”

This could easily pass as new Decemberists material…..

Here are a couple tracks from the Sea Songs for Landlocked Sailors EP.

  • Tarkio- My Mother Was a Chinese Trapeze Artist
  • Tarkio- Moutains of Mourne

    Bonus track

  • The Decemberists- Bridges and Balloons (Joanna Newsome cover)

Apparently they’re releasing some kind of compilation for Tarkio (see Pitchfork today).

Also, Decemberists moved to Capitol records. Prepare to hear idie kids start crying. “Oh no, Death Cab and now Decemberists!!! NOOO!!!!111!!1111!!1!” Whateva.
