ENS contributors John Crowell and I are back for round 2 of the ENS MPMF.13 Picks. Enjoy!
Also, don’t forget to follow Team ENS on Twitter (Joe @eachnotesecure / Caitlin @cutelin / John @terriblesounds / Honorary ENS member Brian, covering for Keith Klenowski @RubatoPhoto). Yes, we’ll be the jerks poking at our phones during shows.
6:00 PM American Royalty @ Washington Park (Caitlin)
Start Friday off with some dancin’, groovin’, booty-shakin’ music.
7:15 PM Youth Lagoon @ Washington Park (John & Caitlin)
John: Yeah, this show will be overrun with folks who go gaga for the Pitchfork “Best New Music” anointed. But whatever…Wondrous Bughouse was a great record. I think this is going to be one of the best shows of the festival.
8:00 PM Us, Today @ Mr. Pitiful’s (John & Caitlin)
Caitlin: Us, Today is one of those bands that remind you how incredibly lucky we are to have such talented musicians in our own backyard. If you haven’t checked them out before, this avante-garde jazz fusion group shouldn’t be missed.
(Bonus: The video was shot inside Grayscale, the developing music venue inside the old Jackson Brewery!)
9:00 PM Silver Tongues @ CAC (Caitlin)
I’m interested to check out this band from Louisville. They’re on Karate Body Records (Bonnie Prince Billy, Wax Fang), so you know they’re gonna be good.
9:00 PM Black Signal @ Below Zero Lounge vs. 9:15 PM The Natives @ Mr. Pitiful’s (John)
John: I’m totally torn on these two acts. I’d really like to see them both but they’re playing at the same time: a classic music festival problem. Honestly, I’ll probably lean more towards the Natives, just because I’m so excited to see hip hop at MidPoint. But ultimately, the flow of the crowd will probably dictate my decision here.
Clearly this is not the band Twin Peaks. This is, however, the first photo that comes up when you Google “Twin Peaks.” Just thought I’d point this out. Whyyyyyy? I’m depressed now.
10:00 PM Twin Peaks @ MidPoint Midway (Caitlin)
I’ll actually probably be at CAC for Caveman but I wanted to mention this for those who don’t have wristbands. Since this show is on the Midway, it’s free and all ages. Get on it! (Twin Peaks is also playing Saturday at Washington Park, 3pm)
10:15 PM Caveman @ CAC (John & Caitlin)
11:30 PM Kishi Bashi @ CAC (John & Caitlin)
John: Caitlin’s talked a lot about Kishi Bashi, so if I didn’t go at least check it out, I’d be a chump. I’m trusting Caitlin on this one.
Caitlin: I love Kishi Bashi with all my heart. I’ve played 151a on repeat too many times to count this year*
11:45 PM On an On @ Know Theatre (Caitlin)
I’m tempted to skip out on Kishi Bashi for On an On based solely on this song.
12:30 AM Damien Jurado @ Blue Wisp (John & Caitlin)
John: Caitlin has a much better story about Damien Jurado than I do. Go read her blurb.
Caitlin: While I was living in Portland interning for a college radio promoter, I mistakenly ate a pot truffle at a work-related Final Friday event. I mean, someone handed me a pot truffle and failed to mention it was made with weed. A LOT OF WEED. Later I ended up at a show with my boss with no recollection of where I was how I had gotten there. For all I know, I flew there on a winged slice of pizza. There was no way that the two beers at the party had gotten me that messed up, so I came to the conclusion that I had been roofied at work. I was frantically trying to figure out a way to professionally inform my boss that someone had roofied my drink at the party when my boss asked me if I had eaten that pot truffle all at once.
Turns out that the show I was at was a Damien Jurado show, but I had no idea because I was really, really stoned. So…I figure I should try to see him again.
