More Southgate House Rumors

Filed in Cincinnati 4 comments

UPDATE: JULY 26, 2012

Eight months later, we get confirmation that the rumors were true.

Last August / early September is the goal for the relaunch, which means they have already booked bands, right? Interesting as I’ve yet to see any tour dates with a Southgate House listing, and dates right now stretch into November in many cases. That being said, it’s exciting! What do you think?

Note: Everything after this in the post was written last November.

It’s been an interesting day of news and rumors surrounding the future of the Southgate House, which will close its doors at the end of 2011. After I posted my theory last night, I spoke with a few more people and slowly began to back away from that guess. But a more interesting theory has surfaced over the past few hours, and here is the update.

This comment was left by someone here on ENS earlier today regarding the future home of the Southgate House.

“an old prayer building on 6th and monmouth…..go grab yourself a slice and look across the street via 6th”

It’s quite possible that someone is messing with us, but it’s also possible there is something to this. Above is a screengrab of the building the commentor cryptically spoke about. And here is a link with some history of the space.

I’ve been told by someone who recently toured the space that it is in some tough shape, dust everywhere, and maybe even asbestos. The owner told them it would take around 300k to get it up to code and usable. It’s also been speculated that this space would hold between 200-300 people, about half of the amount you can fit into the current Southgate House.

I’ve had one theory blown up, and this could end the same way, but I wanted to try and organize the chatter in the meantime.

As always, let me know what you are hearing in the comments.

John, bigger is what I was thinking when I suggested the old Thriftway on the last post. I don’t know why, but I’ve always thought that building will end up being something really cool. Maybe this is it…

Perhaps the old Imax theater across the street could be the next SGH?
