Our MPMF previews have mostly covered national bands up to this point, but sometimes you have to give props to the talented local bands representing Cincinnati. The Yugos are one of the most fun bands in Cincinnati right now. Their self-titled full-length album, an addicting 10-track pop gem, was mixed and mastered by Chad Wahlbrink (Pomegranates, Sacred Spirits, Enlou, and Never Setting Suns). I’ve had the album has been on repeat all summer long (seriously, if the hand claps and “yeah, yeah, yeah’s” of “Never Let ‘em” don’t get stuck in your head after one listen, get your head checked). The Yugos kick off one of the most cohesive and exciting lineups of the weekend, featuring promising indie groups Shark? (see Joe’s preview here), Dinosaur Feathers, and Henry Clay People.
On a side note, lead singer Christian Gough is also the co-founder of Best Friend Records, a non-profit record label dedicated to supporting Cincinnati artists. The label includes fellow garage pop band The Plastic Inevitables.
