Here is a little gem taking place during MusicNOW weekend that you might not have heard much about. On Sunday afternoon, the same day The National will be headlining Music Hall and closing out the festival, there will be a workshop screening for the forthcoming National documentary “Summer Lovin’ Torture Party.” For those more familiar with the band, “Summer Lovin’ Torture Party” was an early title for the album that later became known as High Violet, as Matt Berninger mentions in this interview.
We’ve been kicking around ideas. Every time we have an idea for a title, it lasts a few days and then we realize how bad it is. Not long ago, we were calling it Summer Lovin’ Torture Party. Thankfully, we realized that’s just a stupid title. So right now, it’s still untitled.
The line also comes up during the song “Lemonworld” on High Violet.
This pricey stuff makes me dizzy
I guess I’ve always been a delicate man
Takes me a day to remember a day
I didn’t mean to let it get so far out of hand
I was a comfortable kid
But I don’t think about it much anymore
Lay me on the table, put flowers in my mouth
And we can say that we invented a summer lovin’ torture party
The screening are at 1pm and 3pm at the CAC, and I’m guessing there are enough folks who will want to see it, so you may want to show up early for this one. And if for some reason you don’t have you MusicNOW tickets yet, get on it!
