Ah, the EP. The “teaser” before a new album, or maybe a full album that just trimmed the fat a bit. Whatever the intention of the bands were, there were some pretty good ones in 2007. Here are a few of my favorites of the year.
5. Hot IQs – Dangling Modifier EP – This EP from the Denver based band hit me right away and stuck. Their infectious sound makes me get really anxious for what they have coming up in the future. Standount tracks for me include, “Duck & Cover” and “Retromuff.”
4. White Denim – Let’s Talk About It EP – Austin band is all the buzz of the web recently, but it was early in the year when I could not get enough of this EP, especially the title track. Other than that song though, I really dig Mess Your Hair Up as well on this EP.
Download White Denim songs on RCRD LBL.
3. Arizona – Fameseeker & The Mono EP – This was totally a grower for me after I instantly loved their full length from last year. But the song Thimble is an absolute gem, and Street Sweeper is not far behind. The band have recently relocated to North Carolina and have a very bright future.
Arizona – Midday Midnight (Live On WOXY.com)
2. Ra Ra Riot – S/T EP – Huge maturation for RRR this year and this EP shows it. Despite a long difficult year for the band, this EP shines and is part of the reason they have really been taking off since. Standout tracks include “Each Year” and “Ghost Under Rocks”.

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Is Is EP – A bit of a return to form EP from YYY here as Karen O and company sound pissed and ready to take it out on someone. A great move for the band after the disappointing Show Your Bones. Standout songs on this disc include “Rockers To Swallow” and “Isis.”
A few EP’s that were in the running that I enjoyed but just missed this list include…..
Aloha – Lightworks EP
Annuals – Frelen Mas EP
Black Kids – Wizard Of Ahhs EP
David Bazan – Fewer Moving Parts EP
Harlem Shakes – Burning Birthdays EP
Well, I liked the Lab Partners EP, but not more than any of these, and I did enjoy Joanna a bit, but with very little new material on the EP, it also missed the cut.
I like the choices Joe, especially Hot IQs, Arizona and (my personal favorite) Ra Ra Riot!
Joe – my list is coming out next week and Arizona is our only overlap (which is great). Have you listened to Alberta Cross? That is my #1.
I’m really digging the Jukebox the Ghost EP right now. I think they’re coming into the woxy lounge in January. I’m looking forward to that one.
Good choices, Joe. I especially like The Hot IQs and Ra Ra Riot, but my favorie EP of the years was Los Campesinos! Sticking Fingers Into Sockets.
