If I could be at every show in and around the city I would be. Id love to go to most of them and be one of those bloggers that posts a new concert pic every other day. Im seriously a bit envious of that. But, alas, I cannot, so at times I call on you, the reader and avid music fan to write a piece and see your review here on ENS and enjoy your minute of blogfame, if there is any of that……So, please welcome Christa, a contributing writer. She gives us a nice peek into last nights MMJ show…..

My Morning Review
Twelve hours later, the high from last night’s My Morning Jacket show lingers. I’m reluctant to admit that what I’m about to say is something I didn’t expect: That was THE best show of the year for me.

I went not knowing much about opener Kathleen Edwards. What a pleasant surprise! She has a beautiful voice and is extraordinarily talented. Not to mention she’s backed up by a solid band. I had chills during some of their guitar work. I thought during her last song, “Back To Me,” she sounded a little like Sheryl Crow did 10 years ago.

My Morning Jacket was amazing. The show began with an old-timey scratched up record playing and the stage completely dark and mysterious. It was a brilliant way to set the tone. Jim James and the boys rocked out for about an hour and a half playing eight songs from the new album, Z, five songs from It Still Moves and one or two older songs. I’d seen them once before during the summer of ‘04 and at that time didn’t know much about them. I had been intrigued by their talent but confused about the hair in the face thing. This time around, James’ hair was shorter and bouncing around just as much as he was. Also noteworthy, the lighting added a colorful and exciting element to the visual part of the show.

Plenty of thick and heavy guitar, drawn out solo’s, and the infamous stop-and-start-up-again song endings kept the audience on their toes. I had to wonder what it felt like to be on stage singing and playing “One Big Holiday” as the crowd became so energetic - shouting out the lyrics. Kathleen later joined the band on stage to sing “Golden” and if James and Edwards are not dating right now, they need to be. The sparks were undeniable and their voices were beautiful together. Their harmony was simply breathtaking. Another highlight was when guitarist Carl Broemel brought out the saxophone on “Dondante.” The last song before the encore was a powerful and extended version of “Run Thru.” At that point, I could have left a very, very happy woman. But then came the three song encore of “Lay Down,” “Anytime,” and “Mahgeetah.”

It had been a while since I last saw a show at Bogart’s in Cincinnati but I understand a new addition is the large side screen. Seemingly unnecessary in such a small venue, it was actually a nice amenity. I found myself looking over at it several times just to get a closer look and a different perspective of the show. At one point James made a comment about being on t.v. and waved at himself. I guess he liked it, too.

In a sentimental moment, James ended the show mentioning how they had all been to Bogart’s while growing up and that it was an honor to play there. Actually, it was an honor to be there to witness such a talented group play a great show.
