My Top 10 Concerts Of 2007

Filed in Live Reviews and Music News 6 comments

I feel like I go to less and less concerts every year. And still, I go to way more than I deserve to probably. I was browsing around the music blogosphere today and saw some damned impressive best concerts listings and debated whether or not I would even throw my hat into that ring this year. But, I gotta do it anyway, despite some big challenges when it comes to live music in 2007. Challenge #1 is living in Cincinnati. It is a shame, but there are not alot of national acts that make their way here compared to many other cities around the country, or even Columbus and Louisville for that matter. And in the past, I have made a few trips to both Cbus and Louisville, but this year, I just didn’t. I can put that on the fact that I am still a family man at heart, with a wife and three boys, bouncing to Newport is tough enough at times.

On the positive side though this year, I did get to experience Bonnaroo for the first time, and am very happy I got to see acts like The Police, Spoon, Hot Chip, Feist, EL-P and DJ Shadow for the first time. I could make a list with just my favorite acts from the “roo”, but thats not right. I also was fortunate enough, as a member of the crew at WOXY.com, to see some amazing performances in our lounge this year, from artists like Yo La Tengo, Joseph Arthur, My Brightest Diamond and The Rentals, just to name a few, that I know were special performances in their own right, but will also not be found on this list. So, without any more jabbering, here they are, my favorite concerts of 2007.

Looks like a great year! Lucero at Slims in San Fran was my favorite show of the year. Those guys earn it every night.

Nice list Joe! I’ve posted my top 10 in the Music Discussion WOXY thread, which I’ll have to revise now, given my experience last night for Peter Bjorn & John/The Besnard Lakes.

Let me echo as well that I find it harder and harder to go on the road to any of the neighboring cities (Columbus, Louisville, Indy) for shows. It’s just too hard. I only did it twice this year: Bright Eyes, and Arctic Monkeys, both of them in Columbus, which is less that 90 min. door to door from where I live (Blue Ash).

And I would lump the whole entire Music NOW festival into your #1 choice of Sufjan (and friends… like Bryce!). Not to sound cheesy, but it was a magical three days. Can’t wait to hear what the lineup is for 2008…

I agree that it was a spotty year of sorts for national act live music in Cincy. I feel like I went to 7 or 8 shows in March and none the rest of the year. Oh well, all the more time to check out local bands!

The masses demand more end-of-year lists!

Joe, great list. That Andrew Bird show was great, and The National at Bonnaroo – the culmination of an untoppable first night. I’m upset I missed out on Music Now this year, but that is one mistake I won’t make twice. I’ll definitely be there in 2008. Josh Ritter a Southgate was a definite highlight for me this year, along with Flaming Lips at the Roo and of course my run with Kings of Leon. A really fun year I must say.
