In what promises to be the best MidPoint Music Festival in it’s short history, this years lineup was rolled out in phases over the past couple of months. And now today, we get to take all of those names and match them with a venue and a set time …
The National are back. And it’s not like they really ever left. The band that grew up in Ohio but did most of their musical maturing in New York returned to the Buckeye state Monday night showcasing their latest and possibly greatest album to date, High Violet.

Forecastle Festival starts tomorrow, and Team ENS is getting pretty psyched. Fearless Leader Joe, Keith and I will be down there all three days to tweet, take photos and sweat through at least 6 t-shirts a piece. Blazing heat aside, I’m looking forward to my first trip to Forecastle for what promises to be an amazing lineup. I mean, seriously – Flaming Lips? Devo? Spoon? Cake? It’s an endless list of awesome, and ENS will be there for all of it. Here’s a preview of some of the bands I’m anticipating at 2010’s Forecastle Festival.

Free Energy originally started when two brothers, Scott and Evan Wells, and their friend, Paul Sprangers, left their home of Red Wing, Minnesota after the breakup of indie rock combo Hockey Night. They guys landed in Philadelphia, where they eventually joined up with Geoff Bucknam and Nick Shuminsky to form the deliberately and unironically heavy-jamming, guitar-blasting, hook-worshiping, feel-good rock band Free Energy.

Over The Rhine are a Cincinnati music institution. The Mates of State travelling road show made its way to the 20th Century Theatre in Oakley on Monday. Really, that’s the only way to describe it. Between the magician who got lukewarm-at-best reactions from the early crowd, comedian Todd Barry, Free Energy and the headliners, there was something for everyone. But that’s bound to be true with acts this disparate.
