thurston Pitchfork 2011 Preview: Thurston Moore
As we prepare for the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, we are bringing you previews of several of the bands playing that we are looking forward to seeing. In the days leading up to the festival on July 15th, you can stop by ENS and see a P4K centric preview for the bands.

Enjoy a quick preview of the upcoming set from Thurston Moore. Yet another performance we are really excited to see this year at Pitchfork.

WHO?: Thurston Moore is of course, the frontman and founding member of Sonic Youth, one of the best rock bands of the past 20 years. Moore has collaborated with just about every musician of note during that time span as well, both live and in the studio. Sonic Youth has helped to pave the way for dozens of rock bands throughout their run, while maintaining their ‘cool factor’ and relevancy.

WHEN?: Moore is slated to play on the Red Stage on Friday July 15th at 5:30pm.

WHY?: For the solo album Demolished Thoughts, released earlier this year, Moore stepped outside of his Sonic Youth skin to make what has largely been described as an introspective, acoustic album. While not his first foray into solo recording, it was the first time that Moore handed the reigns to Beck to produce the album, and his fingerprints are all over this gem. It should be interesting to see how it plays out live, especially to a group more accustomed to Moore’s noisier outputs.

PITCHFORK SAYS: The festival curators gave Demolished Thoughts a solid 8.1 earlier this year, here is a quote from the review written by Grayson Currin…

The first words you’re likely to hear in relation to Thurston Moore’s Demolished Thoughts are “acoustic” and “folk.” Indeed, the Beck Hansen-helmed album was made mostly with six- and 12-string acoustic guitars, harps, violins, bass (sometimes upright), and drums. But to call this record “folk” or “acoustic” is to mistakenly suggest that it’s relaxed comfort music from an aging dude who still sings about teenage riots with his hoary rock band.
