The first weekend in May marks the ninth anniversary of Rohs Street Cafe in Clifton Heights. This year, the cafe is celebrating the momentous occasion with an extended weekend of events from Thursday, May 3rd to Saturday, May 5th. The events truly capture the spirit of the non-profit cafe, which in nine years has grown into a wonderful music venue and a space for community engagement.
Like many others, I feel a kinship to Rohs Street Cafe and the people involved in its operation. As a student, the bright and welcoming coffee shop was a quiet refuge to do homework and meet with friends. As an adult, it’s a retreat for coffee and deep conversation.
To me, Rohs Street is a cornerstone of the arts community. Its warm golden walls are always adorned with the eclectic works of local artists, and it’s one of the only all-ages venues in the city that opens its doors to a truly eclectic mix of genres, from jazz and classical to folk, indie and experimental. Now that the cafe has begun booking shows in its intimate sanctuary, a 300 capacity auditorium, I can only anticipate even more breathtaking shows.
Check out the schedule for the weekend. Proceeds from all of the events will go toward the cafe to purchase equipment, expand the drip coffee brewing options, perform cosmetic updates, and replace the live music gear.
