If you are an avid music blog reader, you probably have run across the news that M. Ward has a new album coming out soon, but we are the biggest M. Ward fans we know, so you need to hear it from us at ENS to get the real story, right? Ok, maybe not, but even so, M. Ward does have a new album on the way, although it is not what you would expect. The new record sees Matt teaming up with Zooey Deschanel, who everyone got to know in the movie Elf.

And it is not a proper M. Ward record either, the band name and album title are the incredibly creative “She & Him - Volume 1.” I get pretty stoked for most anything Ward does, and this is no exception, especially after I revisited the first song that Ward and Deschanel sang together on, a Richard and Linda Thompson cover, “When I Get To The Border” from the Martin Hynes’ film The Go-Getter soundtrack. A film that Deschanel had a lead in and M. Ward even scored a bit role.

Also a nugget from the Merge press release….

The songs themselves give a respectful nod to the likes of Dusty Springfield, Linda Ronstadt and The Zombies while Matt’s production gives them just the right amount of golden era sheen. Whether Zooey’s channeling Ronnie Spector as on “I Was Made For You” or joining Matt in turning The Beatles “I Should Have Known Better” into a seductive hula guitar duet, the results are always captivating.

And now the first tune from the collaboration has surfaced as well, and no Ward on vox! Oh well, Zooey has a great voice and it shines on this song, check it out below along with the first song the two appeared on together.
