marburg Show Preview: Marburg Collective showcase highlights eclectic performances at Rohs Street Cafe
This Friday, the creative DIY network known as The Marburg Collective unveil a multitude of new music at Rohs Street Cafe. The show highlights new projects by some of the Marburg’s artists, which includes members of SHADOWRAPTR, The Happy Maladies, and No No Knots. Healing Trapeze (featuring members of The Yugos) will also join for the evening.

The show highlights new developments for the Marburg Collective on many levels. First, it allows a glimpse into the new and continuing projects within the group, including the premiere of Meth Girlfriend, an experimental guitar-drum collaboration between Stephen Patota (SHADOWRAPTR) and Ben Sloan (the late No No Knots). Other performances include new arrangements by folk cellist Brodie Johnson (Honest Abe) and a performance by freak-folk group Healing Trapeze.

In addition, Friday’s showcase invites people to explore the newest evolvement of the Marburg Collective. Here’s some background: The Marburg Collective loosely defines itself as “a network of creative folk connected by their creative work.” This network is made up of young performers, musicians, artists, and writers dedicated to nurturing Cincinnati’s artistic community. From 2009 to 2011, the group ran a DIY house venue and recording studio out of the Marburg Hotel in Clifton. Though the collaborative unit recently moved to a new space in Clifton Heights, the group continues to regularly facilitate open mic nights and alternative shows at Rohs Street Cafe, as well as offering a Real-Time Musical Improvisation course every Saturday morning at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center.
Meanwhile, the group is developing their most ambitious project to date, a series of 4-track compilations of local artists. The series, called “Friends With Friends”, is recorded and hand-packaged by the Marburg Collective; the first volume will debut in late spring.

For local music lovers interested in exploring new realms of Cincinnati sounds, the Marburg Collective continually promotes music that pushes the boundaries of genre and flexes its experimental muscles. Check out their newest offerings on Friday.

About

Joe started ENS in 2003 after most people he wanted to talk to about music were worn thin by his ramblings. The outlet this site provided helped out, and somehow is still going 9 years later. After a four year stint as a WOXY DJ, Joe returned to Cincinnati and continues to pioneer ENS. In addition to the overall look and feel of the site, Joe provides regular reviews, and kinda makes sure this whole thing stays afloat.
