Every now and then a band comes along that smacks you right upside the head and wakes you up to everything about it. I kinda have had that experience with Silversun Pickups this year. The debut EP from these guys, Pikul, never crossed my radar when it came out last year and I even caught on a little late to the gem that is Carnavas this year.
I had really just put the disc in for the first time early this summer in anticipation for their set at the Midwest Music Summit and it was kinda amazing. I really mean that, Carnavas is one of the best albums Ive heard this year by a longshot, and I knew it right away. So, I caught the MMS set, which was equally amazing and have been hooked ever since. So, naturally, I jetted down to the Southgate House last night to catch their set despite a Tallstacks hangover.

They were sharing the stage with Viva Voce, and actually played before them, and though the crowd was much smaller than when I saw them at the MMS gig, it was a dedicated and music savvy group. Many recognizable Cincy music scene faces were coaxed from a normally relaxed Sunday evening into the smoky confines of Newport. Silversun played all the best shots from Carnavas, and leadman Brian Aubert was quick to give a couple kind shout outs to WOXY, where Silversun has played a couple of raucous lounge acts. So, while the energy wasnt nearly at the level of my previous experience, SSPU played an even tighter set and won over a few new fans in the process.

Also, check out a great video Pete from The Anchor Center put up of SSPU…..

Tweedy and Brian from Silversun looked like they were separated at birth in pics on your homepage….both with wrinkled noses, snarls, scraggly hair and guitars….coincidence…I think not.
