Sondre Lerche - Phantom Punch

When you are dubbed this generations Burt Bacharach before you are even 25 years old, it can be a double edged Sondre Lerchesword. You are sure to garner some fans of Bacharach and his work and similar artists. But when you are as young at Lerche, you may fly right over the head of your own generation. Sure, Bacharach is not just for the older crowd and there are plenty of baby boomers who enjoy indie rock (or maybe a few at least), but any loose description can bring different things.

So, if you are Sondre Lerche, understand this, and probably dont care, but just want to create the music that comes naturally what do you do for an encore to his most recent album? Duper Sessions was a jazz-pop effort that was a departure from his strongest pop efforts like “Two Way Monolouge” and seemed to even embrace and increase the Bacharach comparisons.

Well, to follow that up Lerche has released the most rock based album of his young career. Phantom Punch does include some of the pop sensibilities that made him what he is but for the most part he brings some loud guitars and focused vocals to this record (for him). Its an easy listen from front to back, without many songs that I skip often, but the following two stand out. One with more of the rockin edge I mentioned before and another that is something that could have easily been included on previous album “Two Way Monolouge.”

The album was an official release last week on Astralwerks Records.
