Spoon chooses SNL over Cincinnati

Disappointing news from the Spoon website this week as the band has made the following announcement.

We’re going to be on Saturday Night Live next week, (October 6th) can you believe it? Unfortunately, due to SNL related scheduling, we’ve been forced to postpone our shows in Lawrence, Memphis, and Cincinnati. Very sorry for any inconvenience, but we will be back to see you in the spring for sure.

Well, despite my disappointment, I can’t say that I blame them. Even though SNL is not what it once was, it has to be a huge thrill for the band to land this opportunity. But I am shocked that Britt and Jim did not want to hit the Nati after this. Oh well, and just when I was getting ready to lift my boycott on Bogarts…..

Let’s hope Britt and the boys do in fact come back through our area in the spring, and decide to play Southgate House instead of Bogarts.

    Ditto, dude. Ditto.

And, come on, every year since 1978, everybody says ‘SNL just ain’t what it used to be… I remember when I was growing up…’
That said, I can’t say I’m a huge SNL fan anymore myself.

The fact that Spoon canceled the show is probably a blessing in disguise for two reasons: it was at Bogarts, and it conflicted with the Arcade Fire/LCD Soundsystem show in Columbus. Now let’s just hope they decide to come back.

As to Spoon returning next Spring and playing SGH instead of Bogart’s, I think it’s pretty clear at this point that Spoon has outgrown the SGH and is on to bigger stages. I myself would much rather see them play the Madison, which is about the same capacity as Bogart’s (1,400-1,500), but MILES better from any possible perspective you can think of (venue-wise, safe neighborhood, etc.).

Saw Spoon at the Momolith festival 2 weeks ago, and they put on a terrific and most enjoyable set.
