Spoon – Soft Effects / Telephono

Spoon
Spoon is a band that gets away with almost anything with this blogger. Gimme Fiction, Kill The Moonlight and Girls Can Tell are all albums I treasure and enjoy. So, when I heard they were re-releasing these two out f print early albums I got pretty stoked. Though I havent heard either one in full yet, these two samples are distinctly Spoon.

There is certainly a raw innocence to this early, not fully formed sound, and discs like Gimme Fiction are more mature, produced and fine tuned. The biggest thing that stands out is the distortion in the vocals. However, die hard fans and fans like me that didnt catch on to the brilliance of Spoon until Kill The Moonlight can appreciate these releases.

I feel the same way: their early work is raw edgy rock; their later work is full of polished gems that I cherish. Though they don’t play much from their earliest recordings when they do a show, to have the albums & EPs from Telephono on up is a definite must because they are all great in their own right.
