Hands down, one of the better singer songwriters in recent years is Steve Earle. Not only has Earle done loads of great albums through the years, but has also worked with and is respected by some of the best musicians of all time. And I am really impressed with his brand new album, Washington Square Serenade as well, which focuses in on his new place of residence, New York City.

Steve not only does a song with his wife Alison Moorer on the album, but does an excellent cover of the Tom Waits tune, “Way Down In The Hole.” While Earle may have been at his absolute best on albums like Transcendental Blues from 2000, and sorta lost me with the overly political stuff from his last record, The Revolution Starts Now, this is a great album that all fans of his music should consider picking up.

Here is a sample from Washington Square Serenade, the 12th album from Steve Earle and his first in three years.

Also head over to the Aquarium Drunkard for some more Earle tunage…..

I’m a lifelong Steve Earle fan, going back to Guitar Town, but he started losing me with Transcendental Blues, and now he’s all the way off the rails. I’m stunned that you are lauding his atrocious cover of a brilliant Waits song — not only is it the worst cover of it I’ve ever heard (check out Jon Dee Graham’s stellar version by comparison), but it might be the most embarrassingly bad thing Earle has ever done (although The Boy Who Never Cried is right up there).

Earle is one of the writers that critics are generally afraid to criticize. The guy is teflon now. His best work is clearly far, far behind him.

Dave, his best work may indeed be far behind, but I gotta disagree with you about this album. The production work of John King really shines through and the cover tune is really fun. Thanks for your input though…

I suppose I’m the opposite of Dave. Never much of an Earle fan until these last few records. These are much less rootsy/Americana than I can recall, and that’s alright by me.
