If you are a Cincinnatian, and a fan of music, chances are The Afghan Whigs hold a special place in your heart. After all, the band was born and bred here in Cincy, and then took their act to the big time with such critically acclaimed records as Up In It and Gentleman, to name a couple. And of course, their time in the sun led to a big following outside of the Nati’ as well and to this day, over a decade since their last proper album together, the Whigs nothing short of alt-rock heroes for alot of folks.
The excellent fan site Summerskiss has been following every Greg Dulli move for quite some time now, and is preparing a very cool tribute album now as well. In the summer of 2006, Summerskiss made an open call for covers of Afghan Whigs tracks. The response was overwhelming, uncovering talented Whigs-influenced artists from around the world. Nearly 100 tracks were culled to a collection of 13 that range in style from pogo punk duet (Wussy’s “Retardedâ€) to jazz inflected Memphis soul (Susan Marshall’s “Going to Townâ€) to back-alley brooding (Mark Lanegan’s “Tonightâ€).
In addition to the aforementioned tracks, you also get music from Zykos, Matthew Ryan, My Jerusalem and ENS favorite, and Dulli contributor Joseph Arthur. The album is available for pre-order right now and will be in the wild starting next week June 23.
In the meantime, check out a song from the record for free right now, as My Jerusalem do a great cover of the Afhgan Whigs classic, “66″.
