It looks like the answer to the question of who would fill the void left by the loss of Southgate House might be ready to be answered. My eyebrows raised last week when I got a press release announcing the opening of a brand new room at the already amazing and historic Taft Theatre.
The Ballroom at the Taft (located in the lower level of the Taft Theatre). Here is the official word from Mike Smith of MEMI.
“The addition of live events in the Ballroom at the Taft is just a continuation of our overall goal of improving the Taft Theatre as a whole. Which in turn will help improve the cultural & economic development of the city of Cincinnati,” said MEMI CEO Mike Smith. ”We’re looking forward to presenting a great variety of shows that might otherwise skip this market, and to continuing the Taft’s terrific relationship with downtown Cincinnati.”
So not only am I excited to see the new space, but I’m really excited by the bands they are kicking things off with.
Here we go…

Whatcha think? Not bad eh? These are the exact sized shows that Southgate House would have been hosting in the past, so it’s great to see this news for the city of Cincinnati!
Tickets for all Ballroom events will be on sale at www.ticketmaster.com, www.tafttheatre.org, the Taft Theatre Box Office and all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores. Charge by phone at 1.800.745.3000.
I totally agree about FORMERLY GHOSTS
Dang, this is good news!
Since then they’ve also announced a Bad Veins show for Sat. April 21.
I’ve been in the lower section of the Taft to buy something to drink, and I’m really trying to imagine how that’s gonna look like for a concert venue?!? Or am I thinking the wrong space?

This sounds great, but whoever booked the opener for Low, has clearly not seen a live set from Low recently. Last I saw in Seattle a few months back, they are playing a noisy lo-fi post rock set, which makes little sense with an acoustic opener. I can see where someone who owns their older albums would make this mistake though. I think a band like Formerly Ghosts would open well…
