Taste Of Cincinnati: Come for the food, stay for the music

mg 6938 Taste Of Cincinnati: Come for the food, stay for the music
It’s Memorial Day weekend here in Cincinnati, and for most of us, that means time off from work, the first ‘real’ weekend of summer and of course, Taste Of Cincinnati. I’ve been to the Taste for years and always enjoy myself with the different food selections. But this year, I have to admit, the consistency of the music lineup is worth making the trip alone, as this might be one of the more talented collection of local bands playing in one weekend outside of MidPoint.

There are a handful of stages at the festival this year, but really, the only stage that matters is the Metromix stage. Full disclosure here, as I assisted in picking the bands, but I don’t think City Beat is even doing anything with music at this years festival. The lineup at the Metromix stage is a really nice group, but I’d be lying if I didn’t have some favorites / recommendations for how to pair your gorging of the food along with the live music. So here goes.

Let’s just assume you are coming for a four hour block, and want to get the most out of your time downtown musically, if so, here are my top three blocks.

1. Saturday from 1-4pm. Yes, the very beginning of the festival might be the most fun musically as well. Don’t sleep on these bands because they will surprise you with how interactive and visually fun they are in addition to sounding great. Stretch this one another hour and thank me later.

1-2 p.m.: Faux Frenchman
2:30-3:30 p.m.: The Cincy Brass

4-5 p.m.: The Pinstripes

2. Sunday from 4-8pm. For the bearded, string happy crowd, I present to you some of the best Cincinnati has to offer, oh, and sandwiched in between is a bona fide headliner as well in The Lions Rampant. You can also see me awkwardly introduce these band and heckle me from the crowd if you show up for this block.

4-5 p.m.: The Tillers

5:30-6:30 p.m.: The Lions Rampant
7-8 p.m.: Buffalo Killers

3. Saturday from 7:30 – 11pm. Yeah, I know, these are the Cincinnati bands you love the most, so why aren’t they first on my list? Well they are pretty amazing, and I love them too, but I’m putting them third only because I want to push the others forward a bit more, not because the Seeds and Poms are not incredible. But you knew that already, right? Just in case you didn’t plant yourself at the stage Saturday night and join the crowd.

7:30-9 p.m.: The Seedy Seeds
9:30-11p.m.: Pomegranates
50′s [Pop Empire Rx] by eachnotesecure

And this isn’t a block of time, but if you are around on Monday, make it a point to get over and watch some sloppy good Rock music from The Kickaways at 4:30, you won’t regret it. And of course, you really can’t go wrong at the stage ANY time this weekend, but I know you won’t be there the whole weekend, so I hope spotlighting a few blocks helps.

Joe started ENS in 2003 after most people he wanted to talk to about music were worn thin by his ramblings. The outlet this site provided helped out, and somehow is still going 9 years later. After a four year stint as a WOXY DJ, Joe returned to Cincinnati and continues to pioneer ENS. In addition to the overall look and feel of the site, Joe provides regular reviews, and kinda makes sure this whole thing stays afloat.

Thanks for the info! I went from “I guess we’ll check it out since we’ll be downtown anyways” to “this is going the be the highlight of the weekend!”

Buffalo Killers just KILLED. Probably their best set ever from them and I’ve seen quite a few of them over the last 5 years. Can’t wait for the upcoming new album, from which they played about 5-6 songs or so.

The Seedy Seeds set was unfortunately completely thrown into the wind due to some truly horrific sound mix. I couldn’t here much of anything, to be honest.

I also checked out FREEKBOT and holy cow, was that loud! By far the loudest set from the entire weekend. Not really my kind of music but I’m glad I checked it out.
