The Apples In Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder

There was a term in the 90s that seemed to be used to describe bands like Weezer and They Might Be Giants was “geek rock”. Of course, Math Rock was another term that arose in that time period as well. Both were usually used to describe the look of bands rather than theThe Apples In Stereo sound.

If the term was used to describe the actual personality of the lead singer, then Math Rock would describe The Apples In Stereo’s Robert Schneider very well. Schneider is a self confessed math geek and his mathematical musing crop up quite a bit on the new Apples album, “New Magnetic Wonder.” I mean, who else writes songs with titles like “Non Pythagorean Composition” as a title?

Its the first disc from the band since 2002 release, “Velocity of Sound” and the first for the Elijah Wood founded label Simian Records. Yep Roc is splitting label duties as well for the album. The album is a 24 track experience but only about 14 of those are actually full length songs. The rest of the tracks serve as a buffer to bridge the gap and create a uninterrupted listening experience. Tracks like “Energy” and “Same Old Drag” really soar on this disc and more stripped down tunes like “Play Tough” are worthy of mention as well.

The Apples are in Cincinnati tonight at Top Cats Club with Bad Veins opening. It should be a great show, check the pic to the right for show details.

Be sure to check out a great piece on the making of New Magnetic Wonder over at YANP.

And here is a great video of the band in a van singing along to Same Old Drag….
