The Early Tapes

I really hadnt planned to write a review on the Early Tapes show last night, I thought I may be late, didnt have my camera and kinda just wanted to relax and take in their set. However, it would be silly for me not to mention the gig, and things took quite an interesting turn.

I wrote about the Austin 4 piece sometime last week and I really enjoy The Comet almost anytime, so it was an easy choice to hit up the show. The Early Tapes could very well be the next big thing to come out of Austin, following the recent success of bands like Voxtrot. They launched into their set and began to build up steam. About three quarters of the way through my favorite tune, Betty and Thomas, everything went black, literally. The electricity went out and not just in the bar, but on what looked like the entire street. And not just a flicker, a real and complete loss of power.

The band however, had some reserve power to pull from evidently. The drummer didnt miss a beat at all, not even hesitating to continue his portion of the song, even taking things up a notch. The rest of the guys followed suit, though the electricity made their guitars and keyboards irrelevant. However, they grabbed drumsticks and tamborines to join in. Then the lead singer began to cup his hands around his mouth and belt out the lyrics to the next song. One of those, you had to be there things, totally unique and admirable. Im sure lots of bands would have stopped cold, and maybe even been put off by the situation, but big respect to the guys in The Early Tapes for being such good sports.

The power did come back on eventually, and they were able to finish their set. If you are in the Chicago area, you can check them out this weekend. They are playing at Schubas as a part of the Tomorrow Never Knows fest. Last night Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos, The Bees and Dr. Dog all played. And tonight The Early Tapes take the stage with The Ponys and Benjy Ferree. Be sure to check them out if you are in the area.

#1 jared :

glad to see people discovering the magical powers of the early tapes, even if it seems to have involved some sort of drum circle.
