If you were to piece together the ingredients for the perfect British rock record, throw them all into a bowl, stir repeatedly,
and add an extra dose of caffeine for good measure, you may end up with the new album from The Fratellis, Costello Music. The takes everything that is good about hyped up Scottish rock, in the same vein as Maximo Park or Arab Strap and melds it together with some good old Belle and Sebastian fun to make this record.
There hasn’t been an album in a long time that I can easily describe with the term “fun”, but this one nails it. From the bouncy IPod commercial song “Flathead” to the more low key guitar strumming ballad that is “Whistle For The Choir” this has been one of my personal favorite albums of the year for awhile now. However, the disc just got a US release yesterday, so as it spreads to the masses, let me go on a bit more about the benefits.
Our friends across the pond have been enjoying The Fratellis for quite some time now already, starting when their single, “Creepin Up The Backstairs” started getting some radio attention in 2005. The hit singles continued, and so did the attention and Costello Music was spawned.
The US version however, as Ive just noticed, is absent a song, (Ole Black N Blue Eyes) and one has either been renamed (Cuntry Boys and City Girls) or is a different tune entirely. (The Gutterati?) I’ll have to do some homework and get back to you on that, or feel free to help out in the comments. At any rate, this album is highly recommended and loads of fun, so get out and purchase it. But first, sample two of our favorite songs……
