You may have never heard of the Marburg Collective, but you may certainly be aware of their presence in Cincinnati. The Marburg Collective is a group of artists and musicians working for the greater creative health of Cincinnati. Its members can be found in every corner of Cincinnati’s arts & music scene, whether it’s in bands like The Happy Maladies and Fractal Fractal, performing spoken word at open mics, managing local bands or running live sound at shows.
This weekend, the Collective is making its official debut into Cincinnati’s arts scene with the release of their compilation album, simply titled The Marburg Collective Presents A Compilation. The compilation features previously unreleased songs from Cincinnati artists, including Peter Adams, No No Knots and The Happy Maladies, as well as spoken word pieces by Jim Swill (of Realicide), Beth McConnell, Jourdi Bosley and Mauri Moskowitz.
The album is a celebration of every bit of Cincinnati’s musicscape, from the raw poetry slams of its open mics to the quiet chamber folk of Memorial Hall to the buzzing indie music of its hole-in-the-wall venues. All of the tracks were recorded at the Marburg Hotel in Clifton by Ben Sloan and Aaron Modarressi of the Marburg Collective.
“We couldn’t have done this without the musicians in Cincinnati,” says Modarressi. “Most of those musicians came out of the space,” Sloan adds, referring to the Marburg Hotel. The one-time hotel turned apartment building now serves as the group’s living space, as well as a DIY venue that hosts music concerts, art shows, poetry readings and monthly open mics. The space also functions as the group’s recording studio, where all of the songs from the compilation were recorded.
What radiates in this compilation is a raw spirit that permeates through the echoing, bare energy of Jim Swill’s “The Streets are Wild Tonight”, the frenetic freak folk spasms of Jordin Goff’s “Sticky Bellows”, and the sparse beauty of Turmeric’s “Triage.” It is through these songs and pieces that one can truly appreciate the many gifts that are tucked away within our city.
The 14-track compilation will be available at the Marburg Collective’s CD release party this Saturday at ArtWorks downtown. The CD release party will include live music by No No Knots and The Happy Maladies, as well as spoken word performances, gallery art and video projections. The event will also feature the premiere of The Question Cart, a short film by Ethan Philbrick.
The compilation is $10, and includes handmade screen-printed CD sleeves. You can also purchase the album on the group’s bandcamp page.
