I mentioned before that it has been a dry season for live music around here of late so it felt good to hit up the Madhatter in Covington last night for the Bowerbirds and The Mountain Goats. As strange as this may sound to some of you, The Mountain Goats were on a shortlist of bands that I have yet to see that I really wanted to catch live, so getting to this one was pretty important.
First up, the Bowerbirds have a really humble quality about them, both in their stage presence and their music. I expect that the trio from Raleigh, North Carolina will continue to add new fans as a result and I know there were a handful or more that turned up last night just to see them. If you have not checked out their debut album, Hymns for a Dark Horse, do so asap.

John Darnielle and the two other Mountain Goats took the stage next and the 100 or so that made their way to the show got what they bargained for I think. John and his band started softly enough with a tune from Get Lonely in Wild Sage. The set took a turn upwards after that, at least in energy, as the band played a few more upbeat numbers.
I don’t have a setlist for you, and sometimes the names of Mountain Goats songs easily elude my memory but I do recall an excellent version of This Year, Lion’s Teeth and maybe the most fun song of the night in House Guest, which was the encore and closer. The song saw John take to the audience and even cradle a fans head close to him during the song, quite fun and captured in a photo as well.
So, you know the drill, if you get a chance to see The Mountain Goats live, and one of the truly talented songwriters out there in John Darnielle, do it. And oh yeah, John also has a kick ass blog if you somehow didn’t know.
More pics after the jump…..

Damn damn damn. Love the photos (as always), but they make me feel so much worse for not having gone.
I was actually pretty disappointed Joe. I think that the energy was there, but I wish they John would’ve branched out a bit from the last two albums and done some more with the set. I would’ve also liked to have seen a few songs without the band, and then inviting them back up and such. Oh well, like John said, there’s always next year.
I thought it was a great show, overall. Especially, since I was lucky enough to be in the front and during the second encore I was the guy in the hat that John reached out to touch.
Joe, I agree that this was a great show. The Mountain Goats have been on my shortlist for a while as well. Your pictures turned out great! Mine, not as well. But I posted a review.

[…] On the positive side though this year, I did get to experience Bonnaroo for the first time, and am very happy I got to see acts like The Police, Spoon, Hot Chip, Feist, EL-P and DJ Shadow for the first time. I could make a list with just my favorite acts from the “roo”, but thats not right. I also was fortunate enough, as a member of the crew at WOXY.com, to see some amazing performances in our lounge this year, from artists like Yo La Tengo, Joseph Arthur, My Brightest Diamond and The Rentals, just to name a few, that I know were special performances in their own right, but will also not be found on this list. So, without any more jabbering, here they are, my favorite concerts of 2007. #10 The Mountain Goats @ Mad Hatter […]

[…] they were touring the country with one of their biggest fans, The Mountain Goats John Darnielle. I was able to catch both of them earlier this year at a show in town and enjoyed it immensly. Well, the band is on the road again right now with another fan and fellow folk troubadour in Bon […]
