I have a rather unknown band to rave a bit about today from right here in Cincinnati. The band is The Read (pron. the red) and while these guys are still just getting started, keep em on your radar. As evidenced by the small amount of information available about the band online, I had to seek them out at one of their live shows to get some information about these guys, as I had been hearing some great buzz.

I saw The Read play at the Sonic Muse fest, you may recall some positive words I said then. The trio are all young dudes that really love punk music and the political surges behind much of it, and it shines through in their demos. But they don’t simply do the protest thing, (though their myspace page says that indeed, “these are protest songs”), they take a methodical approach to the instrumentation and energy onstage. Even in the somewhat sterile enviroment of the upstairs at the Madison this summer, you could tell the band had a beast within that they badly wanted to unleash. Evidenced by this quote from the band as well…….

We are dancing and yelling and politically motivated

Recommended if you dig early punk bands like Minor Threat, Fugazi or even the Buzzcocks, these guys are one to watch.

So far, only demos to choose from, two different sets, the earliest being the better recording wise, the latter being the better musically which is titled Dissent Is Sexy. Tough choice indeed, so just dig this tune and if you need more, head over to their myspace page.
