Anyone remember The Golden Republic? They were a Kansas City band that put out a nice full length back in 2005 that I enjoyed. The band broke up not long after though unfortunately with no promise of anything new. And the band has stayed on hiatus, but guitarist Kenn Jankowski has been busy.
Jankowski formed a new band, actually before The Golden Republic called it quits, and managed to keep the “republic” aspect of things constant. His new band, once again based in KC, is called The Republic Tigers, and though they share part of their name and some instrumentation with The Golden Republic, it is mostly a fresh and new sound that comes out on their debut full length, Keep Color.
The Republic Tigers were the first band signed to the newest Atlantic Records imprint, Chop Shop late last year and have just released their debut earlier this month. The album sounds way more Brit pop than what you might expect to hear from Kansas City, falling more into line with bands like Travis or early Radiohead than another notorius indie rock band from K.C., The Get Up Kids.
It’s an incredibly solid debut for the band though, and I highly recommend you pick it up, especially if you enjoy the song below, one of the standout tracks from the new album, Keep Color.
