There have been quite a few concept albums done in this day and age. Some have been done by the artists to tell a story, take The Mountain Goats 2005 gem, The Sunset Tree, which was all about growing up with an abusive stepfather. Others make you think even more, some artists insist their albums arent concept albums at all, but critics make their own suppositions.
The Sheds have a concept album, kinda, maybe its more of a theme album. The new one from the Northern Kentucky duo The Sheds is more of what youd expect from these guys. They manage to tell a beautiful story, sing a love song, write hilarious lyrics and even make you dance a bit all to the theme of smoking. Yes, smoking. Tunes like, “Do You Have A Marlboro” and “One Smoke” are just a few of the smoky songs you will find on this album. Id bet however, nobody will be quitting thanks to this effort.
I think if you locked Robert Pollard and John Darnielle in a room and asked them to write a group of songs about smoking they may be able to get as creative as The Sheds have. Maybe.
Check out the album, downloadable for free from their website. You can also down two other albums they have there, of equal quality.
