Well, as most of you are already aware, its the most wonderful time of the year, list season! I dont mean Christmas lists either, I mean top 10 lists pertaining to the albums that rocked our world in 2006. So, you will get a few lists from me, Ill save the top albums list for last however. Today I wanna list my favorite EPs of this year, and man there were alot, I thought this list would be easier than the full albums, but there are quite a few deserving EPs worth consideration. Here is what I came up with.
#5 – Voxtrot – Mothers Sisters Daughters & Wives
Voxtrot chose to bust out of the gates with no full lengths, but with the three EPs instead, which is the equivalent of a full length. At any rate, this was my favorite, with tunes like the title track and Fast Asleep, you can see why lots of folks were on this bandwagon in 2006.

#4 The Mountain Goats - Babylon Springs EP
John Darnielle is always busy, but this year both this full length and EP were stellar. The tracks Ox Baker Triumphant and Alibi are classic Mountain Goats, rich in lyrical content and hard to forget. His songs are the type I almost always find myself singing the next day.

#3 Cold War Kids – Up In Rags EP
The rollercoaster these guys have been on this year has been quite a ride. I jumped on board early in the spring when I got the 2 EPs they released at once and was quite impressed. The “Up In Rags” EP was my favorite though. Boasting tracks like “We Used to Vacation” and “Hang Me Up to Dry”, this has been spinning for me all year.

#2 Robbers on High Street – The Fatalist and Friends EP
The New York boys from ROHS are back to take the thought of sophomore slumps out of anyones head. In anticipation of the full length, which is due in January 07, they released this EP at the end of this year. The first song, “The Fatalist” is an immediate keeper, and it keeps me going all the way through the McCartney cover of “Monkberry Moon Delight”, which is excellent. Cant wait for the full length.

#1 Devotchka – Curse Your Little Heart EP
Yes, I know its mostly cover tunes that make up my favorite EP of the year, but Devotchka manages to do what any ambitious band does when taking on a cover tune. Turn it into your own, while not disrespecting the original work. They do so well on cover tunes from Siouxsie and the Banshees and The Velvet Underground.

So, there it is, some EPs I really loved from this year. A few I didnt mention but really enjoyed as well include, David Bazan, The Features, Catfish Haven, Bad Veins and Bishop Allen, who released an EP for each month of the year.
